EXPLAIN

Dear sir, your air of authority leaves me lost.

Questions:
Eases me from a place of ease.
Contracts with my contradictions to take from me a place.
1. What is the gender portrayed by the persona Autopilots my autobiography.
Frightens my fright.
in the poem? How would you describe the Sighs with my breath.
persona’s emotion? Cite evidences. Wins at my race.
Your certainty has me curtained.
Your nerve has me nervous.
2. For women, have you ever encountered a
man who makes you feel less of yourselves I close my eyes to erase you and you are written in my lids.
I am less to myself, a character in a drama, a drumbeat, a benevolence, a blight.
during a conversation? All parts of me say shoot on sight. Aim for an artery or organ. Good night.

MANSPLAINING
Is what occurs when a man talks condescendingly to someone (especially a woman) about something he has
incomplete knowledge of, with the mistaken assumption that he knows more about it than the person he's
talking to does.
The concept of "mansplaining," a portmanteau of the words man and explaining, is widely believed to have
originated from a Los Angeles Times op-ed article titled "Men Who Explain Things" written by Rebecca Solnit
and published on April 13th, 2008.
While Solnit didn't explicitly coin the term "mansplaining" in the article, she explained her personal
experience of getting patronized by a male friend. On May 21st, 2008, the earliest known mention of
"mansplaining" was posted in the comments section of an article titled "Women Who Hate Dean Hating
Women Hating…wait" on LiveJournal user Fandom_Wank's blog.

Your words are etched deep into my skin,

They must have hurt, these scars,
But you told me they were beautiful, Questions:
And I believed you.

Your accusations have ripped my flesh in, 1. How did the persona in the poem was
My brain and heart, are stored in your jars, deceived?
But you said I was safe and beautiful,
And I believed you.
2. What were the emotions conveyed the
persona?
I am bones in a cage in a rusty bin,
3. If you were to talk to her? What will you say?
I have forgotten my dreams,
and the stars,
You said they were never beautiful,
And I believed you.

EXPLAIN
GASLIGHTING
Is a tactic in which a person or entity, in order to gain more power, makes a victim question their reality.
Anyone is susceptible to gaslighting, and it is a common technique of abusers, dictators, narcissists, and cult
leaders.
It is done slowly, so the victim doesn't realize how much they've been brainwashed.
For example, in the movie Gaslight (1944), a man manipulates his wife to the point where she thinks
she is losing her mind.

SOFT MASCULINITY
If popular culture and fashion are a good way to measure trends, the last few years
have seen the rise of a new kind of masculinity.
It is softer, more self-aware and in sharp contrast to the kind of masculinity we
recognize as the spark that lit the #MenAreTrash and #MeToo flame.
It's a masculinity that allows men to express themselves in ways previously regarded
as the terrain of queer men, or - as in the mid-noughties - of the metrosexual and his
cosmetic inclinations.
''Soft", of course, is hardly ideal as a masculine archetype.

FLOWERBOYS AND THE APPEAL OF 'SOFT

MASCULINITY' IN SOUTH KOREA

A man wearing make-up on the street may elicit

unwelcome glares, questions about his masculinity and
even his sexuality. But in South Korea, ideas about how
to look good as a man are changing attitudes and
influencing the world, as the BBC's Saira Asher reports.

When the BBC posted a video about the make-up routine of a 16-year-old YouTuber in Seoul on Facebook,
the reactions ranged from intrigued to downright vitriolic.
Some assumed this meant he was gay, while others admonished him for his choice saying "real men don't
wear make-up". There were, of course, those that argued for his freedom to live life however he pleased and
against the "fragile masculinities" on show.
But Kim Seung-hwan is used to it. He says he's been called gay by some Koreans online for as long as he's
been doing make-up tutorials. When asked about whether he thought he looked feminine after he put on
make-up, he was confused by the question as if he had never even thought about it. "No I don't. I do not
think about this being a girly look," he says. "It's about looking good."

EXPLAIN
GIRL BOSS CULTURE
Sophia Amoruso wrote the now-famous memoir #GirlBoss, laying the foundation for the #GirlBoss media
platform she launched. At the time, 30-year-old Amoruso was CEO of online fashion retailer Nasty Gal.
The term came to encompass more than the definition of a female CEO and instead embodied the overall
attitude of women — particularly young ones — being able to do anything. The girlboss Instagram account
has 1.6 million followers, and to date, the term has been hashtagged more than 20.2 million times.
Celebrities from Miranda Kerr to Gwyneth Paltrow have self-identified as a girlboss.
Nasty Gal, an online fashion retailer owned by Sophia Amoruso, the so-called “girl boss” filed bankruptcy in
2016.
In the midst of it all, Sophia Amoruso — the pioneer of the term girlboss — resigned from the #GirlBoss
media platform she had created years earlier. But while the girlboss has met a swift and public downfall,
that's actually a good thing — and it's not the end of the female leader. Instead, it's the beginning of a new
space for more inclusive leaders to shine without being defined by gender.

ALPHA MALE, BETA MALE, OMEGA MALE, AND SIMPS

ALPHA MALE
A very high level of social confidence and self-assurance.
Determined, not held back by fear, comfortably takes the lead.
Takes a masculine approach to women, which makes them feel feminine and girly in response. Women
respect him and remain attracted to him.

BETA MALE
Mild levels of social confidence and self-assurance.
Mild levels of insecurity, nervousness and fear in social situations. Follows the lead of the alpha male
because he is either too afraid or lacks the confidence and belief in himself to be the leading male.
Usually misses out on hooking up with women or getting a girlfriend when an alpha male is around
because he makes the woman feel less attracted and he steps out of the way as the alpha male goes after
what he wants.
Takes a neutral approach to women, which makes them feel like more of a friend. Women might respect
him, but they are unable to remain sexually attracted to him for long because the masculine/feminine
dynamic is missing due to his neutral approach.
To keep the sexual spark alive in a relationship between a man and a woman, the man has to take a
masculine approach, which in turn allows the woman to feel feminine, girly and emotional around him.

OMEGA MALE
Low to very low levels of social confidence and self-assurance.
High levels of insecurity, nervousness and fear in social situations. Follows the lead of the alpha male and
beta male because he is too afraid and lacks the confidence and belief in himself to be the leading male or
even the second in command.

EXPLAIN
Tends to use the “innocent nice guy” approach with women and hopes to be liked enough to be given a
chance with a woman. Women neither respect him or feel attracted to him.

SIMPS
Simp is a slang insult for men who are seen as too attentive and submissive to women, especially out of a
failed hope of winning some entitled sexual attention or activity from them.
The word simp is meant to troll young men for doing anything for a girl to get some action he supposedly
deserves.

BASIC BITCH & VSCO GIRLS

Basic bitch is a term used to condescendingly refer to women who have
predictable or unoriginal style, interests, or behavior. The term has been
criticized as misogynistic, though it has been reclaimed, to some extent,
by women who have been labeled basic bitches.
The newest tween trend to sweep the internet, the VSCO girl is
essentially a ‘rebranded basic bitch’ (i-D magazine). Described by
Cosmopolitan as the ‘basic bitch’s younger, cooler cousin’, the VSCO girl
takes her name from the popular picture editing app they use to
maintain their curated aesthetic. But there’s one crucial difference:
unlike the term ‘basic bitch’, the ‘VSCO girl’ trend is not inherently
misogynistic.
Unlike the women branded as ‘basic’, the VSCO girl trend showcases a
refreshing change in how we see teenage girls – and how they see
themselves. No longer worried about being dubbed as ‘uninteresting’,
the VSCO girl takes joy in her newfound aesthetic: her natural habitat is
the beach, where she’ll pose in front of her jeep overlooking a caramel
sunset. Her hair falls in curated-but-natural-looking beachy waves, she
sports a no-make-up-make-up-look with glowing skin, and her breakfast
consists of artfully arranged fruity acai bowls (they fit the rainbow
aesthetic perfectly). She’s cool, she’s carefree, she’s environmentally
conscious, and – crucially – she’s in control of her own narrative.

PRIDE MARCH
Pride parades (also known as pride marches, pride events, and pride festivals) are outdoor events
celebrating lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, non-binary and queer (LGBTQ) social and self acceptance,
achievements, legal rights, and pride.
The events also at times serve as demonstrations for legal rights such as same-sex marriage.
Most pride events occur annually, and many take place around June to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall
riots in New York City, a pivotal moment in modern LGBTQ social movements.

EXPLAIN
The parades seek to create community and honor the history of the movement.
In 1970, pride and protest marches were held in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, and San Francisco
around the first anniversary of Stonewall. The events became annual and grew internationally. In 2019,
New York and the world celebrated the largest international Pride celebration in history: Stonewall 50 -
WorldPride NYC 2019, produced by Heritage of Pride commemorating the 50th anniversary of the
Stonewall Riots, with five million attending in Manhattan alone.

DRAG QUEEN
A drag queen is a person, usually male, who uses
drag clothing and makeup to imitate and often
exaggerate female gender signifiers and gender
roles for entertainment purposes.
Historically, most drag queens have been men
dressing as women. In modern times, drag queens
are associated with gay men and gay culture, but
they can be of any gender and sexual identity.
People partake in the activity of doing drag for
reasons ranging from self-expression to mainstream
performance.

Drag queens vary by type, culture, and dedication, from professionals who star in films to people who do
drag only occasionally.

CAT-FISHING
Catfishing is a deceptive activity where a person creates a
sockpuppet presence or fake identity on a social networking
service, usually targeting a specific victim for abuse or fraud.
The practice may be used for financial gain, to compromise a
victim in some way, or simply as forms of trolling or wish
fulfillment.
Catfishing media has been produced, often featuring victims
who wish to identify their catfisher.
Celebrities have been targeted, which has brought media
attention to catfishing practices.

GENDER-BASED CRIMES
Gender-based crimes are those crimes committed
against persons, whether male or female, because of
their sex and/or socially constructed gender roles.
Gender-based crimes are not always manifested as a
form of sexual violence. They may include non-
sexual attacks on women and girls, and men and
boys, because of their gender.
