Assignment Three

1. Nickel, Aluminium & Copper have face cantered cubic structure yet Ni is soluble in copper
whereas Al has only a limited solubility. Explain why it is so?

2. Draw the phase diagram for a binary alloy system having following features. Melting point of
the two metals (A and B) are widely different. These are partially soluble in each other. There
is one three phase reaction isotherm at a temperature higher than the melting point of B but
lower than that of A. Write down the equation representing the 3 phase reaction. What is it
commonly known as?

3. Why does the eutectic structure not exhibit coring?

4. In the phase diagram shown below, label all the phases. Use Greek letters for solid phases and
chemical formulas for compounds (if any are present).

5. (a) Label the phases in the phase diagram shown in Figure Q5.
(b) For points 1 and 3 marked in the phase diagram determine compositions of the phases
present and the relative fractions of the phases (please show work, not just the final result).
(c) For an alloy with composition 92 wt.% B and two temperatures marked by points 2 and
3 in the phase diagram shown in the previous page, draw schematically the microstructure
formed by a slow cooling from the melt. On your drawing, please list and label all the
phases and microconstituents.
(d) For point 3, calculate the fractions of the microconstituents, assuming that the
composition at the eutectic point is at 90 wt.% B (please show work, not just the final
result).

isotherms, eutectic points, and intermediate phase(s) present.

7. The copper-silver phase diagram is shown in shown below. Copper has a higher melting point
than silver.
(a) Is copper element A or element B as labeled in the phase diagram?

(b) Label all phases present in each region (single phase and two phase) of the phase diagram.
Denote the silver-rich solid phase as gamma ( ) and the copper-rich solid phase as delta
(). Denote the liquid as L.
(c) Calculate the fraction of the various phases present at 30 wt.% A and 300 ˚C.
(c) At 600°C, the solid solution of element A in element B is stronger than the solid solution
of element B in element A. Assume similar processing conditions. Is a material cooled
from the liquid to 600°C with a composition of 90% A and 10% B likely to be stronger
or weaker than a material with the eutectic composition? Explain your answer fully
