BUS 5114: MIS AND TECHOLOGY

UNIT 6 PORTFOLIO ASSIGNMENT

The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the many physical devices around the world that are

connected to the Internet and all collect and share data. (Ranger, S 2020). Big data refers to data

that is so large, fast or complex that it is difficult or impossible to process it with traditional

methods, and is therefore analyzed using modern ways to provide informed decisions and

strategic business actions. (Favaretto et al., 2020). This has been the order of the day in our daily

lives in every industry. The interconnectedness of things with each other and with the Internet is

increasing, meaning it has become more widespread, changing the way business works. To stay

relevant, viable and secure in the future, every business needs to know IoT and understand data

collection, storage and analysis.

In the field of education, the Internet has made our lives easier. IoT has helped improve the

growth of economic, industrial, educational and healthcare systems. (Kumar et al., 2019). The

internet has become a staple of education and e-learning is now common in South Africa. Infect

the two things makes the education industry easier for both educators and students. Although this

was a challenge when it was first implemented for most students who were used to writing

assessments on paper copies and for educators who could not grade paper copies. A large amount
of data is collected and stored for future use in the education industry, hence the success of the

industry.

The education industry used to have few facilities to support learning. On most campuses, these

would be computers used in administration to record grades from paper copies. The register was

hard copies supported by biometrics. The rise of mobile technology and the Internet of Things

allows schools to improve the security of their campuses, monitor key resources and improve

access to information in the learning environment. In 2020, most schools in the world are

stopping contact courses and relying heavily on IoT, which has been a shift to online learning.

Students, especially in high school and college, are moving from paper books to tablets and

laptops. With all the information they need at their fingertips, students can now learn at their own

pace and have an almost identical learning experience in their homes and in the classroom.

(Meola, A, 2021)

However, most of the students left because they didn't have proper gadgets, some couldn't afford

data or poor network coverage, but over time they all adapted to the change and thanks to the

government subsidizing connection costs for students. The education industry has changed the

way it works, now video platforms are used to contact classes, which includes Zoom, Microsoft

team and Google meet. Moodle is now used for grading and marking, but it used to be an Ed-

admin platform that marked manually. The institute where I work as a lecturer now cooperates

with Moodle and Ed-admin systems, so the administrative work for lecturers has been reduced.
IoT and big data have changed the way the education sector used to be. Basically, these two

things make it easier in our organization to occasionally play a recorded video in class, especially

if you are teaching the same concept to different classes. IoT has also improved administrative

systems and processes. Those involved in clerical duties in educational institutions have

benefited from the automation of tasks such as compiling reports, printing documents, creating

schedules, and answering phones. (Meola, A, 2021) This can cause tutors or administrators to

lose their jobs because the school authority will play the recorded videos or reduce the number of

tutors because one tutor can have so many students in one class. My organization is ready for this

change, but data costs are very high for most students, making it difficult to contact online

courses. My organization has tried their best by providing data, for example, on the first day of

every month, students get 30 gigabytes to use while studying with an information system

specialist who monitors how the data is used. The challenges we face include; some students

don't have compatible devices, but the donations helped a lot. Another problem is network

coverage, although network providers are working tirelessly to increase the booster in every

remote area of the country.

The rise of the Internet of Things (IoT) is ushering in an exciting new era in the education

sector, bringing new ways to make learning easier and more enjoyable and significantly

improving teacher and student outcomes.
