PLATE # 1

CONCEPTS IN STRUCTURAL DESIGN

I. Select an example from the list of each Structural Shapes. Copy the properties such as
mass, area, depth, etc. Discuss the meaning of the designation ( dimensions of the parts ).
1. W shape
2. S shape
3. C shape
4. Equal L shape
5. Unequal L shape
6. WT shape. Select a W shape to split from

II. Answer the following:

1. What is the value of the resistance factor for gross area in LRFD?

2. What is the value of the resistance factor for net area in LRFD?

3. What is the factor of safety for gross area in ASD?

4. What is the factor of safety for net area in ASD?

5. Write the formula for the general formula for the shear lag coefficient.

6. Write the value for the shear lag coefficient for the alternative value for W shape
connected to the web with 4 or more fasteners in the direction of loading.

7. What is the formula for the allowable strength in ASD?

8. What is the formula for the designed strength in LRFD?

9. Write the factored load combination in LRFD for dead load, live load, with earthquake
load, and snow load.

10. Write the factored load combination in LRFD for dead load, with earthquake load, and
wind load.

III. Solve the following problems.

Problem 1: A column of a building is subjected to the following load effects:

40 kN compression from dead load
22 kN compression from roof live load
27 kN compression from snow
31 kN from 3 inches of rain accumulated on the roof
36 kN from wind

1. Determine the controlling load combination for LRFD and the corresponding factored
load.
2. Determine the required nominal strength if the resistance factor is 0.90.

3. Determine the controlling load combination for ASD and the corresponding required
service load strength.
4. Determine the required nominal strength based on the required service load strength.

Problem 2: A flat roof is subjected to the following uniformly distributed loads:

1,008 Pa dead load
576 Pa roof live load
648 Pa snow load
1,056 Pa wind load

Although the wind itself is in a horizontal direction, the force that it exerts on this roof is
upward regardless of the wind direction. The dead load, roof live load, and snow load are
gravity loads and act downward.

1. If load and resistance factor is used, compute the factored load ( required strength ) in
Pa. Which AISC( American Institute of Steel Construction ) load combination controls?
2. If allowable strength design is used, compute the required load capacity( required
strength ) in Pa. Which AISC( American Institute of Steel Construction ) load combination
controls?
