Del Pilar
Marcelo H. Del Pilar (Marcelo Hilario del Pilar y Gatmaitán) is popularly known
for his pen name of Plaridel, Pupdoh, Piping Dilat, Dolores Manapat at Siling
Labuyo.
He was born and brought up in sitio Cupang, barrio San Nicolás, Bulakan,
Bulacan on August 30, 1850.
Del Pilar started schooling in the private school owned by Sr. José Flores then he
transferred at the Colegio de San Jose and then he studied philosophy and law at
the University of Santo Tomas.
He established the Diariong Tagalog on June 1, 1882.
To avoid banishment, he was forced to travel to Spain in 1888.
He was assisted by Fr. Serrano Laktao in publishing different Cathecism and
Passion book wherein they made fun of the priests.
Upon his arrival in Spain, he replaced Graciano Lopez Jaena as editor of La
Solidaridad.
Del Pilar died because of tuberculosis in Spain on July 4, 1896 but before he
died, he asked his companions to tell his wife and children that he was sorry he
wasn't able to bid them goodbye.
Before dying, del Pilar retracted from Masonry and received the sacraments of
the church.
