Looking at tenses

A verb describes an action or state of being.


For example: I swim in the sea. or I am swimming in the sea.
Verbs can change to show whether we are talking about the past, the present or
the future. This is called a tense.
Sometimes a verb is only one word (simple verb) and sometimes a verb is made
up of groups of words, which help to show the tense of the verb. It can be
termed as a verb phrase.
For example: is laughing / was laughing
Sometimes tenses use more than one tense.
The tense used in a text depends on the purpose of the text.
A text can be written in the past, the present or the future tense.
To know which tense is being used, you must identify the verb.
The past, present and feature tense can be a feature of a particular text.
Example: history text book is usually written in past tense. Many stories are
written in the past tense because they are about something that had happened ‘a
long time ago’.
Invitations are written in the future tense.
Information texts are written in the present tense in a third person
Remember the first person, second person and third person, singular and plural.
