Qualitative Analysis

Spaces Definitions and Functions

Rearing Houses It is where the silkworms are raised. It should be separated from
other buildings and should be close to the Mulberry plantation.
Environment inside rearing houses is best be controlled and
varies on what instar stage the larvae to be raised. Larvae stored
here are up to the 4th instar stage
Lecture room Here lectures about silkworm rearing and Mulberry farming takes
place for students, farmers, and trainees.
Cold Storage This is where silkworm eggs are stored until they hatch. This area
is best partially underground dimly lit. temperature must be
maintained at 24-29 degrees Celsius and humidity at 80%
Drying Area This where the process of killing the pupae inside the cocoons
without interfering the cocoon shell.
Sorting Area This is where sorting of the silkworm is done to remove defective
cocoons such as unvinated, thin end, filmsy, malformed, and
double cocoons as well as those with scaffolding marks
Dried Cocoon Storage Here is where dried cocoons must be stored for sometimes if
they are not utilized immediately for reeling. A good storage
facility for dried cocoons should have adequate ventilation with a
room humidity of 65%+_ and the storage room should be free
from ants, rats and other insects.
Cooking Area This is where the process of softening the cocoon shell takes
place by partially dissolving the sericin gummy substance that
binds the silk filaments. Stoves should be provided on a tiled
pedestal with sinks and source of water.
Reeling Area This is where the reeling machines can be found. Here the
process of unwinding the silk filament from the cocoons takes
place. Water supply and floor drains should be provided as well
as floor finish good for moisture like ceramic tile, vinyl tile etc.
Re-Reeling Area Here reeled silk is re-reeled to rewind it from small to big
(standard) reels.
Skeining Area this is where the process of twisting the hanks takes place using a
simple apparatus known as skeining machine or turner.
Booking Area In this area, the method of making the skeins appear like neat
book with eight skeins in a horizontal row and five skeins with
separate in a vertical row. Neatly ties the skeins with separate
bands at three different places and wrapped with tissue paper to
prevent the raw silk from absorbing moisture.
Baling this is where the process of wrapping the books with thin cotton
material takes place. Then it is wrapped with in cotton/gunny
cloth and finally pack into a bale approximately 60kg.
Mulberry Cuttings Storage Cut mulberry branches are stored here for silkworm consumption
Warehouse This is where raw silk, woven silk, silk threads are stored to keep
them from high moisture.
Weaving Area here thrown silk are woven manually or mechanically through
power looms. It must be well lit and well ventilated
