GROSS SITE SELECTION

Region III(Central Luzon) has a population of 11, 218, 177 as of 2015 . It is surrounded by the
waters of Manila Bay and South China Sea on the west. I t has 7 provinces: Bataan, Pampanga,
Zambales, Tarlac, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija and Aurora.

Agriculture is one of the main source of income in region II mostly rice which made Region II
earns its name “rice granary” region. This aspect can contribute with the success of the proposal.

The commanding position of Region III is vital for the success and promotion of sericulture in
other parts of Luzon.

Bataan

Bataan situated in the Central Luzon region of the Philippines. Its capital is the City of Balanga.
Occupying the entire Bataan Peninsula on Luzon, Bataan is bordered by the provinces of Zambales and
Pampanga to the north. The peninsula faces the South China Sea to the west and Subic Bay to the north-
west, and encloses Manila Bay to the east.

The province has an area of 1,372.98 square kilometers (530.11 sq mi). It is divided into two
congressional districts and has 14 municipalities and one city which is Balanga.

CHAPTER 4

Pampanga

Pampanga is bounded on the north of Tarlac and Nueva Ecija, on the east by Bulacan, southwest
by Bataan and west by Zambales. Its terrain is relatively flat with only one distinct mountain, Mount
Arayat.

Its land area is 2,180.68 sq. kms. Its terrain is relatively flat with only one distinct mountain, the
Mt. Arayat.

The province is divided into 4 congressional districts. It is composed of 19 municipalities, 3 cities

and 538 barangays. The City of San Fernando is the capital of the province and serves as the government
seat of Central Luzon.

Nueva Ecija

CHAPTER 4
PhilSeri- A Facility for Sericulture and Silk Processing Felipe, Dom Jegs S.

Nueva Ecija is the largest province and the biggest rice producer of Central Luzon, thus, often
referred to as the “Rice Bowl of the Philippines.”

The province is the largest in Central Luzon, covering a total area of 5,751.33 square kilometres
(2,220.60 sq mi)[5]. Its terrain begins with the southwestern marshes near the Pampanga border. It
levels off and then gradually increases in elevation to rolling hills as it approaches the mountains of
Sierra Madre in the east, and the Caraballo and Cordillera Central ranges in the north.

The province is divided into four congressional districts, which consists of 27 municipalities and
five cities, namely: Cabanatuan, San Jose, Palayan, Gapan and Science City of Muñoz.

DISCRETE SITE SELECTION

After comparing the 3 provinces on the Gross Site Selection the province of Bataan turned out
to be the best site for the proposal because of its combined flat and mountainous terrain and favourable
climate. Agriculture is one of the main ways of living here just like the other provinces in region III.

SITE A

Note: The climate in Abucay especially in its uplands is favourable for raising mulberries and silkworm.

CHAPTER 4
PhilSeri- A Facility for Sericulture and Silk Processing Felipe, Dom Jegs S.

According to the climate graphs and charts from en.climate-data.org, the average temperature of Abucay
is suitable for sericulture and temperature fluctuation is not too great.

SOIL TYPE

From coastal to the mountainous areas, the soil texture are hydrosol, fine sandy loam, fine sand,
clay loam, clay and undifferentiated. The undifferentiated texture soils were developed from the pyro-
epiclastic materials from the volcanic center of Mt. Natib, while the alluvial plains consisting of clay to
clay loam soils were derived from epiclastic materials from Mt. Natib.

Note:

The site sits on the portion of land with clay soil. Clay soil has high fertility for plants. It retains water
very well. It is very good for planting especially for Mulberry.

LAND USE

CHAPTER 4
PhilSeri- A Facility for Sericulture and Silk Processing Felipe, Dom Jegs S.

EXISTING LAND WATER-USE

Built up

Residential areas

The dwelling units are scattered throughout the municipality with concentration on the urban
areas along the National Road. Residential areas cover the portions of Wawa, Laon, Calaylayan, Omboy,
Salian and Gabon. With rapid urbanization growth, agricultural and fishpond areas have been converted
for mix uses of residential and commercial purposes.

Commercial areas

Commercial activities take place on the central portion of the urban area. This runs along the
stretch of National Road from Calaylayan, where the Mega Market and Trade Center is Located, to
Capitangan. Most residential houses in these areas are continuously converted into commercial uses,
mostly retail stores and personal services.

Industrial areas

CHAPTER 4
PhilSeri- A Facility for Sericulture and Silk Processing Felipe, Dom Jegs S.

There is one industrial site in Mabatang. The Milcrete Corporation is intended for the
manufacture of pre-cast concretes.

Cottage industries such as fish and food processing, broom making and others are done at
backyard or in the residential areas. For instance, broom making is done in Mabatang and fish
processing are done in coastal barangays.

Tourism areas

These establishments include restaurants, resorts and tourists centers. Some are located within
the urban areas, while some are adjacent to agricultural areas. Some have freshwater aquaculture as a
component.

Institutional areas

All barangays in Abucay host institutional establishments like schools, church, health centers,
barangay halls and other public buildings.

Agricultural areas

Agricultural areas consist of those inland and coastal areas. In inland areas, rice/cash crops
production and orchard farming are predominant uses. The conversion of a large protion of agricultural
areas and grassland areas into mango plantation is apparent.

Protected areas

The BNP has been declared by law as a protected area. The management zones of the protected
areas as implemented include strict protection zone and multiple-use zone. Part also of the protected
area is the ancestral domain for Aeta communities occupying the whole area of Bangkal.

Note:

The site sits on the upland area of Mabatang. It is mostly grassland with ample vegetation for shade and
landscaping. The site is very suitable for the plantation of mulberry.

ORANI is particularly proud of the accomplishment of its water district. In terms of the quality of service,
the water district has been adjudged as a “Class A Water District”. There is sufficient supply of water
coming from the Zambales Mountains (particularly Mount Natib). The surplus is so large such that the
water district can potentially supply water to surrounding towns. The expansion of its coverage area will
be necessary to provide potable water supply in to other outlying barangays outside the current service
area.
