Lesson Idea Name: Ice-cream counting
Grade Level/Content Area: Kindergarten/mathematics

Content Standard Addressed: MGSEK.CC.4 Understand the relationship between numbers and
quantities; connect counting to cardinality.

1. When counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with
one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object. (one-
to-one correspondence)

conclusions.

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

The learning goal for this lesson is for students to be able to use the technology software
provided to learn about number quantity and one to one correspondence while counting.

Selected Basic Productivity Tool: Microsoft PowerPoint

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply.

X Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

X Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by

Lesson idea implementation:

The students will be able to go through the e-book, with audio and subtitles as a class for
whole group instruction. I will tell the students the goals for this lesson before presenting the
e-book. The goals for this lesson are counting cardinality and understanding what value a
number represents. Throughout the book I will pause when the question of “how many more
scoops does she need” is asked and then have the students use a wipe board and write the
answer to show me, so I can check their understanding. The e-book will lead into an activity,
supporting the standard of one-to-one correspondence. The activity concluding the e-book
lesson will allow students to take their knowledge and make their own ice-cream cone with
up to 10 scoops. Students will need to label the scoops by number in the correct order. I will
give them feedback by looking at their ice cream cones they decorated and making sure they
labeled the scoops correctly before hanging them up in the hall for other students to view.
When students create their ice cream scoops I will also upload their picture to the PPT,
and students will be able to record an explanation of their image for their families to view.

Managing engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that gets students
actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts?
This form of technology actively involves students’ interaction because we will go through the
e-book with co-usage (using the computer together to find a product), by helping the
character help get a total of three ice-cream scoops by incorporating mathematics. Students
will get to engage in whole classroom instruction by answering prompting questions on a
wipe board to participate. Students will then have about 20 minutes to make their own ice-
cream cone, which will keep them engaged because they get to use their creativity to show
their knowledge about counting and cardinality.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

This activity supports and enhances learning experiences for students because it leverages
both auditory and visual stimuli. The pictures provide the visual support while the narration
provides the auditory stimuli. The narration can also be helpful for those who are not able to
read on their own. This form of technology is equitable since it supports a multitude of
diverse learners such as ELL students and students with special needs. This tool also supports
the UDL principle of engagement because the e-book includes interactive participation.

creativity and increases their engagement.

Reflecting on enhanced learning:

I believe this activity will have an impact on student learning because the story is engaging in
helping practice mathematics and understanding one to one correspondence with ice cream,
which all students love. At the end of the e-book, students will get to design their own ice-
cream cone with up to 10 scoops. They will be required to label them using their knowledge
of one-to-one correspondence. This is the activity I am most looking forward to because the
students get to be creative while demonstrating their understanding of 1:1 correspondence
and cardinality. They will also be able to share their creativity with their peers and showcase
their work to others once it is displayed in the hallway.
