1 Always rough out the stock at slow speed. Remove square corners

2 No spectators

3 As the wood's diameter decreases, move the rest closer to the work

4 Always remove the tool rest when sanding

5 Never touch the work with your bare hands when it is in motion

6 Hold the tools firmly with two hands

7 Never wear loose clothing, jewelry, and/or long hair when turning.

8 Always keep the tools sharp. When they become dull ask the instructor to sharpen them

9 Use the right tool for the right jobs

10 Before turning the machine on, always spin the work by hand to make sure it clears the tool rest

11 Before turning on the lathe, make sure spindle turnings are secure between centers

12 When faceplate turning, periodically, check the screws to make sure they're secure
