ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I express my deep sense of gratitude to all
those who have been instrumental in
preparation of this project.
First and foremost, I would like to sincerely
thank my Physics Teacher MR.GOVINDARAJAN
who gave me the special opportunity to do this
project and for hiscrucial guidance throughout
the project on the experiment
“EXPLORING EVAPORATION
THROUGH COLORS”.
Secondly, I am grateful to my school Principal
Mr. Om Prakash.
Besides, I am also thankful to my parents and
friends for their valuable suggestions and
guidance, which has helped me in the
accomplishment of this project.
ABSTRACT:

I want to find which color helps ease

evaporation of water more. I’ve
hypothesized that the red colored
plastic would be best since it is of a
dark color.

THEORY:
WHAT IS EVAPORATION?
“Evaporation, process by which
an element or compound transitions f
rom its liquid state to
its gaseous state below
the temperature at which it boils; in
particular, the process by which
liquid water enters the atmosphere as
water vapour in the water cycle.

Evaporation, mostly from

the oceans and from vegetation,
replenishes the humidity of the air. It
is an important part of the exchange
of energy in the Earth-atmosphere
system that produces atmospheric
motion and
therefore weather and climate. This
transfer of water
between Earth’s surface and the
atmosphere occurs when
some molecules in a water mass have
attained sufficient kinetic energy to
eject themselves from the water
surface. The main factors affecting
evaporation are temperature
(specifically, the temperature
difference between the evaporating
surface and the air), relative
humidity, wind speed, and solar
radiation. ”

FACTORS AFFECTING
EVAPORATION:
Temperature:

Temperature ∝ Evaporation

Surface Area of the Liquid:

Surface area of liquid ∝ Evaporation

Humidity:

Humidity ∝ 1/Evaporation

Wind Speed:
Wind Speed ∝ Evaporation
THE WATER CYCLE:

“The water cycle, also known as the

hydrologic cycle or the hydrological
cycle, is a biogeochemical cycle that
describes the continuous movement of
water on, above and below the surface of
the Earth. The mass of water on Earth
remains fairly constant over time but the
partitioning of the water into the major
reservoirs of ice, fresh water, saline
water (salt water) and atmospheric water
is variable depending on a wide range of
climatic variables. The water moves from
one reservoir to another, such as from
river to ocean, or from the ocean to the
atmosphere, by the physical processes of
evaporation, transpiration, condensation,
precipitation, infiltration, surface runoff,
and subsurface flow. In doing so, the
water goes through different forms:
liquid, solid (ice) and vapor. The ocean
plays a key role in the water cycle as it is
the source of 86% of global
evaporation.”

WATER CYCLE AND
EVAPORATION:

When sunlight warms the water’s

surface, evaporation takes place as part
of the water cycle. The sun’s heat causes
the water molecules to travel ever-faster
until they are able to escape as a gas. A
water vapour molecule spends roughly
10 days in the atmosphere after it has
evaporated.
MATERIALS REQUIRED:

♦ Four plastic containers

♦ Sixteen Cups of water
♦ One small cup
♦ Six tablespoons of dirt
♦ Tape
♦ One sheet of colored plastic
♦ One quarter for weight
♦ Notebook
PROCEDURE:
Step 1: Take four plastic containers
Step 2: Put sixteen cups of water and
six tablespoons of dirt inside each
container.
Step 3: Cover each container with one
sheet of colored plastic.
Step 4: Use on quarter as weight on
each of the containers.
Step 5: Record your observations.
OBSERVATION:

It was observed that the clear plastic

worked more efficiently.
RESULTS:

The hypothesis went wrong. It was

assumed that red plastic would be
more efficient in evaporating water
because of its translucent color and
dark shade (attracts sunlight
efficiently).
But in the end, the observations
showed that the clear plastics worked
best.
PRECAUTION:
♦ Be carefully in recording the
observation.
♦ Arrange everything perfectly.

CONCLUSION:

We have now discovered that clear

plastics are efficient to evaporate
water.
