1. Motivation is a significant factor to consider in managing an organization. Describe the different motivation
theories below. 1 pt each

Theory Description (Key points)


Maslow’s Hierarchy of Maslow (1970) believed that people are motivated to satisfy
Needs certain needs, ranging from basic survival to complex
psychological needs, and that people seek a higher need only when
the lower needs have been predominantly met. Although
Maslow’s work help to explain personal motivation
in the workplace. (page.418)
McClelland’s 3 Basic David McClelland (1971) examined what motives guide a person
Needs Theory to action, stating that people are motivated by three basic needs:
 Achievement-oriented – people actively focus on improving
what is; they transform ideas into action, judiciously and
wisely, taking risks when necessary.
 Affiliation – oriented – people focus their energies on
families and friends; their overt productivity is less because
they view their contribution to society in a different light
from those who are achievement oriented.
 Power – oriented – people are motivated by the power that
can be gained as a result of a specific action. They want to
command attention, get
recognition, and control others. (page.420)
Operant Theory Operant conditioning and behavior modification demonstrated that
people could be conditioned to behave in a certain way based on a
consistent reward or
punishment system. (page.418)
