0 Introduction
Vehicle Lift is a device, often powered hydraulically, for raising a vehicle so that the underside is accessible for
inspection and repair.
It is lifting device with guided load carrying device for lifting land based means of transport such as cars,
motorcycles, lorries, buses, trams, rail vehicles, industrial trucks and similar, in the following named vehicle, and
designed for working on or under the load
Note 1 The guidance of the load carrying device is given by the supporting structure.
Note 2 A vehicle lift may have the ability to tilt the load carrying device about a horizontal axis parallel to or
perpendicular to the main axis of the lifted vehicle.
Note 3 The following types of vehicle lift are examples of those covered by this definition: single and multi-
column lifts, single and multi-cylinder lifts, mobile column lifts, scissor and parallelogram lifts, short stroke lifts,
which support vehicle wheels, chassis or other designated lifting points (see Annex B (informative)).
Note 4 Short stroke lifts are floor mounted vehicle lifts with a maximum vertical travel of not more than 500
mm, which are not designed for working under the raised load.
2.0 Terms
2.1. manually driven vehicle lift
vehicle lift where the load carrying device is driven by manual effort
2.2. power-driven vehicle lift
vehicle lift where the load carrying device is not driven by manual effort
2.3. fixed vehicle lift
vehicle lift fixed permanently to its location
2.4. movable vehicle lift
vehicle lift which can fulfil its function without being fixed to the floor and may be designed to be transportable
2.5. mobile vehicle lift
movable vehicle lift equipped with wheels, rollers, etc. such that it can be moved from one place to another
with or without load
2.6. manually mobile vehicle lift
mobile vehicle lift which is moved by manual effort alone
Doc.No: Rev: 01 Issue Date:
2.7. vehicle lift with powered mobility
mobile vehicle lift which is not moved by manual effort
2.8. initial position
lower limit position of the carrying device
2.9. rated load
maximum load that a lift has been designed to carry referring to the normative vehicle or to special vehicles
mentioned in 5.7.4.4
Power supply to the vehicle lift by internal combustion engines is not considered.
The floor or ground supporting the vehicle lift in use is assumed to be horizontal.
This document is applicable to vehicle lifts which are manufactured ½ year after the date of its publication
as EN.
Safety distances
As a minimum the following parts of the human body shall be safeguarded by these minimum distances:
width of fingers: 25 mm;
height of feet: 120 mm.
Country of manufacture
Designation of the machinery
Designation of series or type
Serial number
Year of construction that is the year in which the manufacturing process is completed.
6.1.2. Marking
The direction of the movement of the lifting element shall be permanently marked (refer to Annex
B (informative)). The marks shall be suitable symbols or text and can be located on the control
devices themselves or directly adjacent to them.
Concrete Specifications
All models must be installed on 3,000 PSI reinforced concrete only. Additional concrete requirements will
vary by lift.
Check the chain / wire rope for proper termination. (Spliced, Aluminum pressed Ferule, Wedge
socket Anchorage).
Roll-of safety devices for rail vehicles shall have a minimum height of 25 mm above the track and
shall automatically come into operation after a vertical travel of the tracks of 0.1 m.
Each end stop shall be designed to resist a horizontal force of 20 % of the rated load, applied to
the top, without permanent deformation or to resist a force of 30 % of the rated load without
breakage.
The pick-up pads shall be conical or cubic in order to assure a safe and clear use. The maximum
ratio between height of the pad and the diameter of the largest circle which could be inscribed in
the base of the pick-up pad shall not exceed 1:1.
Check the Scissors lift structure hydraulic system hoses clamps and leakage.
Check overhead switch assembly to assure that switch bar is depressing switch plunger
sufficiently to actuate the switch.
6.1.12. Safety Catch / Pawl Lock
Latch handle must be positioned at the top of the latch control cover.
Any discrepancy found at the time of visual inspection which would affect the safe operation the
competent inspector shall inform the client by means of detailed inspection report.
Once that the inspection has been carried out and the competent inspector is satisfied and the
supporting structure are capable withstand the load the inspector can proceed to load testing.
Control devices shall be of the hold-to-run type. Check the proper function of controls lifting and lowering;
check also the proper control markings.
7.5. Arms
Carrying arms shall be equipped with automatic mechanical locking systems that prevent the arms from
swinging.
Vehicle lifts shall be designed to prevent the load carrying device from moving more than 100 mm from any
position in case of leakage after a vertical travel of the load carrying device of 500 mm.
8.1. The load test is a test to assess the structural integrity of the post section, arms or platforms and their fixings.
It is also used to assess the effectiveness of braking system. The load test shall be carried out after the
satisfaction of visual and functional test.
10.0 Reporting
The written report shall be as per the record, service inspection and test conducted by competent Inspector.
Where the test is not satisfactory, a responsible representative of the client shall be informed by means of
discrepancy report. If the competent inspector considers that the discrepancy will affect the safe operation of
the equipment, then arrangements must be made to ensure that the lift will not be used until remedial work
has been carried out
