Female Reproductive System

o Reproduction is the process by which parents reproduce new individuals or offspring.

o The union of the sperm and egg is called fertilization.
o The reproductive system only starts to become active when the person reaches puberty
stage.
The miracle of conception is one of the complex processes that the female reproductive system can do
with the help of the nervous system and the hormones of the endocrine system

How does the female reproductive system is capable of conceiving a new organism with the use of its
different parts together with the other organ systems?

Parts of the Female Reproductive System

The functions of the female reproductive system are to produce female sex hormones; produce ova or
egg cells; receive the male copulatory organ for sperm transfer; and protect and nourish the developing
embryo.

It consists of a pair of ovaries and fallopian tubes, a

uterus, and a vagina.

The ovaries are the female gonads which are located at

the right and left depression of the upper pelvis. They
produce the ovum or the egg cell.

Ovary is the main reproductive organ for females. It

produces and releases female sex hormones and
gametes.
When the ovum matures, it will be swept
away by the tiny finger-like projections of
the oviducts or fallopian tubes. The ovum
is moved by the tiny hair or cilia that is
found in the lining of the fallopian tube
which extends to the uterus.

Fallopian tubes or oviducts are structures

that receive the egg cell.

The uterus or womb accommodates a developing fetus.

It is a muscular organ that the embryo attaches in its inner

lining called the endometrium. When the embryo is
successfully implanted to the endometrium, a female is
considered pregnant

The cervix is the neck of the uterus that leads to the vaginal
canal. It opens or dilates when the female delivers a baby.

The next part of the female reproductive system is the vagina.

It is the female copulatory organ which is described as a long,
elastic, muscular canal that receives the male copulatory organ which transfers the sperm. This is also
where the menstrual blood and tissues are expelled from the body.

The external part of the female reproductive system that is visible is the vulva. There are two pairs of
skin folds that enclose the vaginal and urethral opening. The thicker skin fold which is composed of fatty
tissues is the labia majora and the inner fold which contains rich supply of blood and swells during
sexual intercourse is the labia minora. The clitoris lies at the anterior junction of the labia minora. This
part is highly sensitive and gives sexual arousal to the woman.

The walls of the vagina give lubrication to the penis during copulation. It also expands during copulation.
It also expands during intercourse and childbirth. The hymen is a membrane that surrounds and partially
covers the opening of the vagina.
