Importance of Sociology od Education for Teachers

Growing evidence emerged during the course of the 20th century to support the idea that an
effective teacher must also be familiar with their pupils. This sparked the growth of education
that was first focused on the needs of the students and afterwards the families. Sociology is a
wonderful tool for this kind of training. The teacher will be more effective in his or her
instruction the more the student's background is known to him or her. The racial and ethnic
background, native language, social class, family values and many other aspects of a student's
life, as well as his or her individual attributes, will determine how the student in question can be
taught most effectively.
In order to provide the student with a more individualized education, sociological knowledge can
also assist the student better comprehend and work in collaboration with the student's family.
The teacher might use this information to support the need for additional or more targeted
resources to create the greatest learning environment possible.
No amount of emphasis can be placed enough on the value of sociology of education to student
teachers. The reality that the school is a miniature version of society as a whole is made clear to
instructors. Additionally, it educates students that the current societal demands determine all of
the school's operations. The course also informs teachers that a child's education extends beyond
the walls of the classroom and includes interactions with family members and the broader
community. The course's significance cannot be overstated, and understanding it is essential for a
teacher to effectively control how society interacts with a child's education.

Importance of Sociology od Education for Teachers

The study of educational sociology aids teachers in realizing the value of interacting with their
pupils in a variety of settings. Because we are social beings, interacting with others comes
naturally to all humans. How well our relationships work out depends on how we view and
interact with one another. The classroom environment will be relaxed and free of tension if the
instructor engages the pupils in genuine conversation rather than just issuing directives.
It’s of great importance to understand each other during the learning process. Sociology studies
the way people communicate and reach mutual understanding. It helps educators to realize the
perspectives of education.
Students come from many sociological backgrounds, so it is important for teachers to have some
familiarity with these histories in order to connect and engage with each student. This enables the
teacher to effectively adapt instruction to fit the unique needs of each student. For instance, there
will certainly be major differences between a student from a wealthy family and a student from a
home that is in poverty. A student from a low-income family may have significant learning
disabilities and require more time and attention, whereas a student from a high-income family
may require more challenging assignments than those included in the standard curriculum.
Students of different races frequently have different ways of exhibiting respect, for instance,
having been taught it is impolite to make direct eye contact with those in charge. Students from
diverse cultures may find it difficult to adapt to the majority culture in the classroom. A teacher
won't be able to understand or engage any pupil very well if they don't have any knowledge of or
insight into sociology. In order to create a classroom community, the teacher has to have some
understanding of sociology.

Role of Educational Institutions Play in the Development of the Society

A social institution is a group or organization with clear duties, expectations, and standards that
serves to fulfill the social requirements of the community. Social institutions include the
economy, the government, the family, the education and religion.
Social institutions constantly interact, influence, and are dependent upon one another in modern
society. For instance, some religious organizations think they should be in charge of governing
bodies and educational institutions.
Institutions of higher learning play a vital role in providing access to education and fostering the
growth of transferable skills that help underprivileged communities in society shape their future.
Education institutions' active participation in society fosters equality of opportunity and raises
students' social awareness.
All students are given the opportunity to succeed and thrive in today's world, regardless of their
background, by providing them with an education because it is widely believed to be a passport
to success. This civic duty can be fulfilled in a number of ways, from volunteer work to inclusion
in a supportive community that the educational institution has helped to create.
Social institutions as the agents of social change would create a ripple effect in the field of
education helping the country’s economy to boost and achieve stability.

Education, Social Stratification and Inequality

The development of education has always been closely linked to ideals of mass democracy.
Reformers value education, of course, for its own sake for the opportunity it provides for
individuals to develop their abilities and aptitudes.
Yet education has also consistently been seen as a means of equalization. Universal education, it
has been argued, will help reduce disparities of wealth and power by providing able young
people with skills to enable them to find a valued place in society.
Sociological studies conducted to answer this critical question have openly argued that education
tends to express and reaffirm existing inequalities far more than it acts to change them. The term
‘inequality’ here simply refers to the existence of socially created inequalities which is known as
‘social inequality’. It is not biologically based.
Though it is a bare fact that all human beings are not born with equal physical and mental ability
and proficiency, yet a society, if so wishes, can provide equal opportunities to all its members for
achieving goals and aspirations of their life. Sociologists are not much concerned with inborn
inequalities based on sex, age, bodily strength or quality of mind, but are concerned with
inequalities in conditions of existence (Beteille, 1966). This inequality can be filled in to some
extent through the efforts of a society by providing equality of opportunity to all. Though
education does not guarantee high status and positions to all people, yet it plays an important role
in equalizing opportunities in three ways (Gore, 1994): 1. By making it possible for all those who
have the desire to be educated and the ability to benefit by that facility; 2. By developing a
content of education which will promote the development of a scientific and objective outlook;
and 3. By creating a social environment of mutual tolerance based on religion, language, caste,
class, etc., for providing equal opportunities of social mobility to all individuals in society, and
for securing good education.

How Teachers Can Promote Social Change in the Classroom

Education is not a means of preparing for life, but rather life itself, as the philosopher John
Dewey stated. Dewey spent a lot of time thinking about the need of education in a vibrant,
dynamic democracy, and he held the view that classrooms can both study and initiate social
change. Dewey wrote on these subjects in the early 20th century, when arguments raged over
whether teachers should be tasked with preparing children to conform or actively promoting
development and improvement where they are required.
These discussions are still going on today and have direct effects on educational policy. Dewey
is still one of our best advocates for the idea that social change should be primarily centered in
the classroom. It's one thing for current and aspiring educators to value Dewey's ideas about
learning and social change, but quite another to implement them in the classroom. How then can
educators create actual classrooms that reflect Dewey's vision for the role of education in
society? (a) Encourage active participation among the students – teachers must construct a
learning environment where every student is encouraged to participate. (b) Teach students how
to think and not what to think – encourage students to free their minds by guiding them in right
direction and ask them to come up with their own questions. (c) Encourage the students to
experiment – encourage all the students to experiment with the possibilities while providing
them task/homework that sparks curiosity. The more the students will experiment, the more they
will learn about the given topic. (d) Introduce real – life simulations in the class – true learning
only comes from practical examples, instead of teaching them theories, give situations/examples
that can mimic real – life situations.
Instead of forcing study materials down the throats of the students, teachers and mentors must
help them learn how to inquire and think critically. With the methods listed above, they should
attempt to bring about societal reforms directly from the classrooms.

POVERTY: ITS IMPLICATION IN EDUCATION

One of the best ways to gain financial security is through getting an education, but lack of access
to education is a significant predictor of poverty flowing down from one generation to the next.
Education and poverty are directly linked. Increasing access to education can level communities,
increase a society's longevity and overall health, and contribute to environmental preservation.
The issue is that, according to UNESCO figures published in 2018, there are around 258 million
children and youth who are not in school globally. There are many reasons why kids skip school,
but they are all related to poverty. Families living in poverty often have to choose between
sending their child to school or providing other basic needs. Even if families do not have to pay
tuition fees, school comes with the added costs of uniforms, books, supplies, and/or exam fees.
This data shows the reality of what our public education system is facing today. Nearly one-fifth
of students nationwide are either living in poverty, attending a high-poverty school, or both.
Poverty negatively impacts students in a variety of ways within education and beyond. This can
be through a variety of different factors that are often symptoms of poverty, like health issues
stemming from a non - nutritional diet, homelessness, lack of food, or the inability to receive
medical treatment for illnesses. These factors often place more stress on a student, which can
negatively impact the student’s ability to succeed in a school.

Effect of Globalization in Education

The operating environments for educators are still being shaped by the forces of globalization.
People's experiences in both formal and informal schooling have changed as a result of this.
Corporate entities have become more involved in education since the start of globalization. This
can be explained by the fact that a lot of people think investing in the education sector is
profitable. Contrary to the past, when the majority of schools were managed by government
organizations, corporate organizations now hold the obligation of managing educational
institutions. Another important impact globalization has had on education is the commoditization
of education. This is evidenced by the restructuring and development of new educational
programs. The use of part-time and long-distance learning programs has been used to popularize
and market these programs. Technology is one of the greatest determinant of globalization in
education. The delocalization of education has been the most prominent impact of technical
advancements on education. People can now study at home or at their jobs thanks to the use of
the internet and the expansion of distance learning. Additionally, they enable participants from
very diverse regions of the world to participate in the same program. A close connection between
people over vast physical distances has also been made possible by these developments.
However, because they frequently use highly customized means of learning, these learning styles
have been criticized for restricting interpersonal connection.
Globalization has impacted learning in many different ways. Although it began in the west, it has
changed the entire world. It has sparked the development of information technology and
increased economic competition in many nations. From the music business to the food industry,
it has an impact on everything. Basically, it has an impact on everyone. It is viewed positively by
some while negatively by others.
