PART-A (10x2=20 Marks)
1. Define Chunk samples.
2. What is Site reconnaissance?
3. What is Ultimate Bearing Capacity?
4. What is Net Pressure Intensity?
5. Give the advantages of Floating Foundation.
6. What is mean by proportioning of Footing?
7. What are the types of Hammer used for Pile Driving?
8. What is the use of Batter Pile?
9. Compare Rankine‟s and Coulomb‟s theory.
10. What is meant by Tension cracks? Explain
PART-B (5X13=65)
11. a) (i)Under what circumstances different types of Shallow footings preferred and 6
explain.
(ii) what are the general requirements of Foundation and explain briefly. 4
(iii) Explain Disturbed and Undisturbed sample. 3
(OR)
b (i) Discuss Boring report in detail. 7
)
(ii) Explain wash boring method of advancing bore hole. Write its merits and
6
demerits.

12. a) Determine the depth at which a circular footing of 3m diameter be found to provide 13
at F.O.S 3,if it has to carry a safe load of 1500KN.The foundation soil has c=
10KN/m3 γ= 18KN/m3.Use Terzaghi analysis.
(OR)
b (i) What are the causes and effect of differential settlement? Suggest remedial 7
) measure to reduce it.
(ii) Explain different types of foundation. 6
13. a) An R.C.C. column has a square footing founded at a depth of 2.4m below ground 13
level on a clayey stratum of average density 18 kN/m3 and shearing strength 40
kN/m2. The total load applied to the soil is 850kN. Calculate the dimensions of the
footing assuming a factor of safety 2.5.
(OR)
b Explain the design steps of a Footing. 13
)
14. a) A Group of 16 friction piles is to support a column load of 4000kN. The piles will 13
be driven in four rows with four numbers in each column. The piles are 35 cm
diameter. And the c/c spacing is 1m both ways. What set value must be attained by
the piles when driven by a single acting 22.5kN steam hammer with 90cm stroke
so that the pile group can carry the column load?

be penetrated by pile to support a safe working load of 350KN.Take adhesion
factor 0.7.

15. a) A gravity retaining wall retains 10 m of a backfill, unit weight of soil =18 kN/m 3, 13
angle of shearing resistance =30° with a horizontal surface. Assume the wall
interface to be vertical, determine (i) the magnitude and point of application of the
total active pressure (ii) if the water table is at a height of 5m, and how far do the
magnitude and the point of the application of active pressure changed. Take
submerged unit weight= 10kN/m3.
