Quadratic Equation
Objective:

Students should be able to illustrate quadratic equations.

A. differentiate equations from inequalities

B. write equations in their simplified form (y = Ax2 + Bx + C)
C. differentiate quadratic equations from linear equations
Expression vs Equation
BASIS EXPRESSION EQUATION

Meaning Expression is a mathematical phrase An equation is a mathematical

which combines, numbers, variables statement wherein two expressions
and operators to show the value of are set equal to each other.
something.

What is it? A sentence fragment, that stands for a A sentence that shows equality
single numerical value. between two expressions.

Result Simplification Solution

Relation symbol No Yes, equal sign (=)

Sides One sided Two sided, left and right

Answer Numerical value Assertion, i.e. true or false.

Example 7x - 2(3x + 14) 7x - 5 = 19

Inequality vs Equation
BASIS INEQUALITY EQUATION

Meaning An inequality is a mathematical An equation is a mathematical

statement that shows one expression is statement wherein two expressions
greater of less than the other are set equal to each other.

What is it? A sentence that shows inequality A sentence that shows equality
between two expressions between two expressions.

Quadratic Eqn vs Linear Eqn
Linear Equation
Equations with 1 as the degree are known as linear equations in math. In such
equations, 1 is the highest exponent of terms. These can be further classified into
linear equations in one variable, two-variable linear equations, with three variables,
etc. The standard form of a linear equation with variables X and Y are aX + bY - c = 0,
where a and b are the coefficients of X and Y respectively and c is the constant.

Quadratic Equation
Equations with degree 2 are known as quadratic equations. The standard form of a
quadratic equation with variable x is ax2 + bx + c = 0, where a ≠ 0.
Seatwork 1.1B:
CLASSIFY WHETHER LINEAR OR QUADRATIC
1. 4y = x - 8
LINEAR QUADRATIC
2. y2 + x 2 - 7 = 8
3. 2c = 10a - b
4. 3x + 5 = 15
5. 0 = (p+q)2
6. x = 4z1/5 + y2
7. y2/a2+x2/b2 = 1
8. 0.25 MN + N2 = 6
9. ax2 = x
10. 18h + 15k + 21 = 0
Standard Form of Quadratic Equation

Simplification Rules:
a - positive integer
b - integer
c - integer
