Patterns, Sequences, and Means

Patterns – series or sequence that repeats according to a rule
Term - each number in a sequence
Rule – a way to calculate or solve the problem

Arithmetic sequence
uses addition/subtraction
an = a1 + d (n-1)
nth term = first term + common difference (number of terms-1)
Geometric sequence
uses multiplication/division
an = a1r^n-1
nth term = first term x common ratio ^ number of terms-1

Arithmetic series
sn = a1 + an / 2 or sn = n/2 (a1 + an)
sn = first term + last term / 2 or sn = number of terms / 2 (first term + last
term)
if an is not given, sn = n/2 [2a1 + d (n-1)]
Geometric series
sn = a1 (r^n-1) / r-1
nth term = first term (common ratio ^ n – 1) / common ratio - 1
if n is not given, use: sn = a1 / 1-r

Arithmetic mean
d = an-a1 / (n + 2) -1
common difference = last term – first term / (number of means to be
inserted + 2) - 1
Geometric mean
r = (n + 2)-1 √an / a1
common ratio = (number of means to be inserted + 2) – 1 √ last term / first
term
