Curriculum mapping can be described as the process where all the people involved in

education/learning process, like teachers, administrators and other support staff work together to plan
out the learning goals for the students throughout their learning journey (Chalk.com. 2021). Curriculum
mapping sets the scope, aligned across grades, pace of learning, standards, and a benchmark against
which actual classroom progress can be measured as students advance to make future curriculums more
effective (Chalk.com. 2021). This characteristics of curriculum mapping brings some benefits for anyone
involved in the learning process. For example, for the teachers the curriculum mapping would help them
to trace down the progress of the learning process, how far the students have developed to achieve the
goals. In the long run, doing the curriculum mapping would help teacher to know how and what to
prioritize in the learning process by doing the reflection throughout the time.

For the administrators, curriculum mapping help them to make sure that everyone involved in the
learning is on the same page and understanding and keeping the quality of the learning meet the
standards. Last but not least, the students would be helped to understand the expectations of the
learning process and how to engage with it. Curriculum mapping also provides the students with the
consistency in learning which makes the learning process more comfortable.

But like any other systems, curriculum mapping has its own limitations. Curriculum mapping is possibly
to not covering individual needs of each students. Curriculum mapping may give less room for the
teacher for flexibility that real-life situations that need paradigm shift (2019). For the students, when the
learning process is about achieving a generalized and standardization goals, they may lost
acknowledgement and respect for their own progress.

Curriculum mapping is a great tool to improve the standards of a learning environment, but again, as a
collective system, everyone involve in the education process should be aware of the disadvantages of
curriculum mapping. It would be better if the people involved in the curriculum making/mapping can
minimalize the disadvantages of this system.
