While the passage states that the pollution theory is seemed as the more likely

cause of sea otters decline, the lecture expresses a different point of view.

Firstly, the passage claims that the otter’s population has declined due to the
presence of oil rigs and industrial chemical pollution. It argues that water samples
have been analyzed and showed that the water contains chemical pollutants
which affect in their resistance of fighting diseases. However, the lecture states
that this can be explained by the predation theory. Since there is no sign of the
dead otters in the beaches than they have been immediately eaten by their
predators after being killed.

Secondly, the passage asserts that their decline is in direct proportion with other
sea mammals decline. This results in the entire ecosystem been affected by the
environmental pollution. On the other hand, the lecture states that otters have
changed their diet since whales are being hunted by humans. This results in the
otter eating other sea mammals.

Thirdly, the passage argues that due to the ocean currents that are transporting
the environmental pollutants, there is an uneven pattern of otters decline on
different locations. The lecture explains this based on the predator theory. Since
their predators cannot access shallow and rocky surfaces their population seems
stable, otherwise their population is declined.
