“Cèilidh”

What is Céilidh :
Originally the word Ceilidh (kay-lee) descended from the Gaelic word
for ‘gathering’ or ‘party’… However, these days when people think of a
Ceilidh, they think of a fun-filled night of wild dancing, good music and
great company!
A ceilidh is a Scottish social event which involves traditional folk music
and dancing. You will normally come across ceilidhs on special
occasions such as weddings, birthdays and anniversaries.

What is its role in Scottish culture?

The 'ceilidh' is a literary entertainment where stories and tales, poems
and ballads, are rehearsed and recited, and songs are sung,
conundrums are put, proverbs are quoted, and many other literary
matters are related and discussed. You will normally come across
ceilidhs on special occasions such as weddings, birthdays and
anniversaries.

Popular Ceilidh dances

Ceilidh dancing has derived from the Old Time dances and couple dances that found their way onto the
Scottish dance floor in the 19th century. The names of many of the common Ceilidh dances may well be
familiar to you, such as The Dashing White Sergeant and The Gay Gordons.
