Genetics Worksheet 1 - Dominance

ATLs:
I.14. Use and interpret a range of discipline-specific terms and symbols
VI.8. Process data and report results
VIII.18. Identify trends and forecast possibilities

Solve the following genetics exercises.

I. We crossed red-eyed drosophila flies with white-eyed drosophila flies. In the
first generation(F1), all the obtained descendants had red eyes.

a.What conclusions can you draw out from the above result?
b. Designate by symbols the corresponding alleles.
c.We crossed the red-eyed drosophila flies of F1 with one another,we obtain the following
results in the second generation(F2) :
● 76% red-eyed flies
● 24% white-eyed flies.
Carry out a factorial analysis to verify the above results.
II. A cross between two lines of peas,
the first with a long stem and the
other with a short stem, produced a
generation(F1) with long stems.

a. Explain the above results.

b. Self-pollination* of pea plants of F1 gave
the following results:
● 150 long-stemmed plants
● 49 short-stemmed plants
1- Calculate the percentages of the obtained
phenotypes.
2- Carry out a factorial analysis to verify the above results.

*Self-pollination: the transfer of pollen from the anther of a flower to the stigma of the same
flower or sometimes to that of a genetically identical flower (as of the same plant or clone).

III. In the human species, the myopia trait dominates the normal one. A myopic
woman marries a normal-visioned man.

x
Carry out, in different cases, factorial analyses that allow us to specify the theoretical
proportions of every phenotype of the descendants of this couple.
IV. We put a female and a male rabbit in cage A and another female and male rabbit in
cage B.The two couples had the same phenotype;the females had short hair while the
males had long hair. The obtained descendants of the above two couples were the
following:
-Descendants of the couple of cage A:
● 28 short-haired rabbits
● 27 long-haired rabbits
-Descendants of the couple of cage B:
● 56 short-haired rabbits

a.What is the dominant allele?Justify your answer.

b.Designate by symbols the corresponding alleles for the two phenotypes.
c. What is the genotype of every parent in the two cages A and B?
Justify your answer.
d.Calculate the percentages of the obtained phenotypes.
e. Do a punnett square to verify the obtained results in each of the cages A and B.
