Subject Code: GEC 4 Description: MATHEMATICS IN THE MODERN WORLD
Semester: ______ School Year: ______ Period: ___________

Introduction

This module introduces to some of the special language that is a foundation for mathematical
thought, the language of variables, language and symbols.

Rationale
COURSE MODULE

1. Illustrate variables, language and symbols of mathematics

2. Explain the nature of mathematics as a language
3. Discuss kinds of mathematical statements and language

Intended Learning Outcomes

A. Rewrite mathematical statements

B. Elaborate variables/language to rewrite mathematical statements.
C. Convert English expression to mathematical sentences or vice versa
Activity

The students will watch video on the mathematical language and symbols thru this links given below:

WEEK 2

Topic 1 Variables

A variable is a symbol that acts as a placeholder for expressions or quantities that can modify or
change; it's commonly used to represent a function's argument or an arbitrary element of a set.

WEEK 2
EXAMPLE 1 Writing Sentences Using Variables

Rewrite the following sentences using variables to make them more formal.

a. Is there a set of integers where the sum of their squares equals the square of their sum?
b. The square of any real number is nonnegative.
Topic 4 Existential Universal Statements
Solution:
a. Are there x and y with the property that x2 + y2 = (x + y)2 ?
or: Are there numbers a and b such that x2 + y2 = (x + y)2 ?
or: Do there exist any numbers a and b such that x2 + y2 = (x + y)2 ?

b. Given any real number a, a2 is nonnegative.

or: For any real number a, a2 ≥ 0
or: For all real number a, a2 ≥ 0

Mathematical Statements

(Illus. 1: Any negative real number less than zero is a negative real number.)

A conditional statement states that if one thing is true, then another must be true as well.
Topic 3 Universal Existential Statements
(Illus. 2: If 16 is divisible by 4, then 16 is divisible by 2.)

Universal Conditional Statements

Universal statements have some variation of the words "for all" while conditional statements
contain a variant of the word "if-then".

A universal conditional statement is one that is universal and conditional at the same time.

(Illus. 3: For all animals b, if b is a cat, then b is a mammal.)

The statement can be written in a way that makes its conditional nature explicit but its universal
nature implicit.
Topic
If b 5
is a cat, then b is a mammal. The Mathematical Language
or: If an animal is a cat, then the animal is a mammal.
or: For all cats b, b is a mammal.
or: All cats are mammals.

EXAMPLE 2 Rewriting a Universal Conditional Statement

Fill withinside the blanks to rewrite the succeeding statement:

For all numbers x, if x is negative then x2 is positive.
