Turbine start-up by controller
Task and function

Startup of the turbine is initiated by the function "turbine startup by controller". After the startup
command has been activated, turbine speed is increased to rated speed.
See the print screen of Control in the Turbine System:

Step 1:
The first System that will be active is the SGC Oil Supply.
In this moment a several of conditions are interlocked to switch on all the pumps of the oil system.
The detailed conditions is represented in the sequence of this document, through the logic diagrams.

Step 2:
After the SCG Oil System the SGC of Condensate and evacuation system are released.
Step 3:
SCG Turbine releases the draind valves and turbine protection system.

Enabling turbine controller start

Turbine controller start is enabled as soon as:
§ No trip signal to or from the controller is present;
§ Turbine criterion has released startup;
§ Superheated steam is available upstream of the emergency stop valve;
§ Minimum emergency stop valve inlet steam pressure is present;
§ The turbine protection system is active ("Turbine protection system activation" SGC is in
operation) and the controller enable signal is present;

START command
§ When the START command is present, automatic startup is active and the speed setpoint is
increased up to the warmup speed and then up to NSTART (default = 101% of rated speed) in
accordance with the startup curves;
§ Waiting periods and speed setpoint gradients are calculated automatically based on the
temperature of the casing wall.
Speed transient protection
§ If the speed transient dn/dt is not achieved within the no-hold speed range, the turbine is run
down to a speed situated below the corresponding no-hold speed range by appropriate
adjustment of the speed setpoint.
§ Turbine trip is initiated if the turbine speed remains within the no-hold speed range for a period
that exceeds the monitoring time (can be defined).

STOP / CONTINUE
§ When the STOP command is present, the speed setpoint remains at the next holding point
(based on the startup curve);
§ STOP must not be applied within a no-hold speed range;
§ When the CONTINUE command is present, raising of the speed setpoint is released again;

§ When NSTART has been reached, the speed can be adjusted manually by the operator or
using the synchronizer;
Synchronization procedure
§ Speed can be adjusted between 95 and 103% through discrete signals “increase / decrease
speed" from the synchronizer;
§ If the signal "Generator circuit breaker ON" is present (except during turboset island mode),
the speed setpoint is set automatically to a minimum load to protect the turboset against
reverse power;

Automatic loading procedure after synchronization

§ When the turboset is synchronized, the load controller is automatically activated and loads the
turbine to MIN load;
§ Further load increases are inhibited during the warmup time;
§ After expiration of the warmup time, normal load operation is released;
§ This procedure can be interrupted by selecting the speed controller;
Restart during turbine coastdown after turbine trip

§ The speed setpoint increases in accordance with the appropriate startup curve upon a restart;
§ The controller assumes control as soon as the setpoint matches the actual value;
§ This is only possible below no-hold speed range;
Operation
§ Selection of START (= SGC is ON) of turbine controller via associated subloop control;
§ Selection of STOP (= SGC is ON) and CONTINUE (= SGC is OFF) of turbine controller via
associated subloop control;
§ Speed setpoint adjustment via setpoint adjuster (= SPADJ) of speed controller when controller
is selected and automatic startup is not active;
§ Load setpoint adjustment via setpoint adjuster (= SPADJ) of load controller when controller is

Task and function

§ The turbine is shut down either by means of a controlled shutdown or through turbine trip;
§ A turbine trip can be initiated by the turbine protection system or by the operator;
§ No-load operation of the turbine is initiated by the OPEN checkback signal from the generator
circuit breaker;
Controlled shutdown of turbine

Recommended procedure
§ Unload the turbine to minimum load using the load controller;
§ Select the speed controller;
§ Use the speed controller setpoint to reduce the load from the turbine so that the reverse power
protection system causes the generator circuit breaker to open (turbine in no-load operation);
§ Initiate turbine trip. The speed setpoint is set to 0;
§ The turbine then coasts down to standstill / turning gear operation;
Operation
§ Load controller and speed controller selection via associated subloop controls (= SGC is ON).
§ Load setpoint and speed setpoint adjustment via setpoint adjusters (= SPADJ) of associated
controllers.
