TROPICAL MONSOON TYPE

CLIMATE
Introduction
 Location- the tropical monsoon
type of climate is found in southern
Asia with onshore wet monsoons in
the summer and offshore dry
monsoons in the winter. The
tropical marine type of climate is
experienced along the eastern
coasts of tropical lands which
receive steady rainfall from the
trade winds all the time.
 Area- tropical monsoon type
 Asia: india, Pakistan,
Bangladesh, Sri Lanka,
Myanmar, Southern China,
Cambodia, Laos, Thailand,
Vietnam, The islands of Hainan,
Taiwan, and the Philippines.
 Australia: the northern tip of
Australia.
Tropical marine type
 Africa: parts of south- east
Africa and Madagascar.
 Central America: Jamaica,
belize, Honduras, Nicaragua.
 south America: eastern
brazil.
 Australia: parts of north-
eastern Australia.
Content-
 Climate- the tropical monsoon type
of climate is regarded as a sub-
region of the tropical and of sub-
tropical humid and dry climatic
region. It has hot summers and cool
winters with a distinct rainy season.
In the areas with tropical marine
type climate, the onshore trade
winds influence the climate all the
year round and lead to more evenly
distributed rainfall.

 Temperature- The monsoon climate has a

high mean annual temperature and a small
annual temperature range like equatorial climate.

As shown in the climograph for Mangalore, India the

average annual temperature is 27.05 oC (80.7oF)  but
only has an annual temperature range of 3.6 oC (2oF).

 Natural vegetation- The natural vegetation of

tropical monsoon lands depends on the amount
of summer rainfall. The monsoon lands with
three distinct seasons, cold, hot and rainy, exert
great influence on the appearance of the
vegetation. Trees have to be fairly tolerant of
local physical and climatic conditions to survive.
They grow rapidly in the rainy season, shed their
leaves during the hot dry season and remain
comparatively inactive in the cool season. Trees
are normally deciduous since they shed their
leaves during hot dry season tn withstand
excessive transpiration. The overall vegetation
varies from dense tropical evergreen vegetation
to thorny scrubland, due to differences in
precipitation in different parts of the monsoon
lands. Where the rainfall is heavy, e.g. Southern
Burma, peninsular India, northern Australia and
coastal regions with a tropical marine climate,
the resultant vegetation is forest. The forests are
more open and less luxuriant than the equatorial
forest with far fewer species. The less dense
forest allows more sunlight to reach the ground,
resulting in denser undergrowth. Bamboo
thickets which predominate in regions of
intermediate rainfall often grow to great heights.
 Human adaptions- They have become
more dependent on cultivation and
agricultural activities as compared to the
people living in dessert or eastern lands.
They have also adapted to grow the crops as
according to the amount of rainfall and have
adopted the method of terrace farming to make
farming more efficient. The people along with
agriculture have adapted to the rearing of animals.
With the agricultural practices, rearing animals
seemed to be very much helpful for them due to
the usefulness of animals in agriculture.
Wildlife- Around half of the variety of plants that are
present in the world originate in these regions.  The
wide range of fauna found in these regions
include mammals, invertebrates, birds, and
reptiles. The tropical monsoon region is home to
animals like monkeys, parrots, jaguars, lemurs, ocelots,
eagles, anacondas , hummingbirds, macaws  and flora
like epiphytes, coffee, vanilla ,bamboo, banana,
camphor trees, jackfruit, etc.  Name of important
trees: Sal, teak, bamboo, myrobalan.
