Why should you read this book?

August Pullman was born with a facial difference that, up until now, has prevented him from going to a
mainstream school. Starting 5th grade at Beecher Prep, he wants nothing more than to be treated as an
ordinary kid—but his new classmates can’t get past Auggie’s extraordinary face. WONDER, now a #1
New York Times bestseller and included on the Texas Bluebonnet Award master list, begins from
Auggie’s point of view, but soon switches to include his classmates, his sister, her boyfriend, and others.
These perspectives converge in a portrait of one community’s struggle with empathy, compassion, and
acceptance.

The following is a detailed description of the activities you will have to
complete, as part of your Reading Plan, during this academic period.

Before initiating the Reading Plan activities, it is important that you

understand the purpose and organization of said activities. For this, you
must read all the instructions carefully.

1. Booklet What percentage of the

Reading Plan grade is
comprised by this activity?
20%

Why is it important to complete the Booklet?

Carrying out short activities based on your Reading Plan will allow you to easily internalize the important aspects
of the literary work you are reading. As such, through a sequence of activities, you will be able to advance in your
reading while establishing connections between events, characters, situations, and life lessons.

What is the goal of the activities present in this booklet?

Our goal is for you to infer and link, through each of the booklet’s questions, what you are reading with your own
personal experiences. As such, we hope the book you are reading will provide you with “lifelong learning,” which
is one of the foundations of our educational approach.

Why should I submit different installments of the booklet?

We thought that submitting the booklet in separate installments will help you advance in your reading, fostering
time managing skills. In this way, you will be able to designate reading moments throughout the academic period,
allowing you to better enjoy the reading experience by engaging in a timely, empathetic, and thoughtful reading.
The reading needed to complete the booklet activities will also encourage you to think about your final project
and the requirements you must fulfill to complete it.

Booklet:
For this part, you have to read each story, fragment, or book chapter, and complete the corresponding activity,
following the assigned schedule. You must submit each activity on the established date so that your teacher can
evaluate it and give you feedback.

2. Written Assignment
What percentage of the
Reading Plan grade is
comprised by this activity?

What is the purpose of the written assignment?

The purpose of this assignment is for you to express, in a written manner, different aspects of the book and how
these relate to your life experiences. We know that you have valuable insights, reason why this assignment must
be completed based on your own ideas and interpretations. As such, you will not be able to find the contents of
the assignment on the internet or other sources.

Written Assignment:
This part of the booklet deals with the written component of the Reading Plan. Through this activity, you will
demonstrate that you can critically and creatively analyze the book you read and analyze certain literary
concepts related to the story.

Your written assignment is…

1. You have finished the book “Wonder” by J.R. Palacio, think about the following questions:
● Can you remember any moment in your life when you have felt like August?
● Can you think of a moment in your life when you acted like Julian toward one of your friends or
classmates?
● Is there anything about these experiences you would like to change?
● What did you learn from these experiences?

2. Directions: Based on your reflections, write a 150 words letter (3 paragraphs min.) (using a text editing
program) to your future self, explaining how you felt in these situations and give advice to “grown up you”
about how to accept who you are and how to be kinder to others.
3. Graphic Work and
What percentage of the
Reading Plan grade is 20%
comprised by this activity?

Oral Presentation
Why is it important to make a graphic representation of what I read?
Through this graphic representation, you will be able to express your creativity in a non-written way, making use
of other forms of expression. This activity is thought of to be completed in a simple manner, utilizing low-cost
materials, and by yourself. Since this is supposed to be a creative and proactive work component, you will
not be able to look it up on the Internet, as it has to be related to your own life experience.

Graphic Work and Oral Presentation:

This work component responds to the VISUAL aspect of the book. The aim is for you to graphically and creati-
vely interpret the story you read. The assignment is divided into two parts that will be jointly graded. The first
part of the assignment consists of the elaboration of a graphical representation of the story. The second part of
the assignment is the oral presentation of the graphic representation you created. Remember that the work
must be completed by yourself, individually.

For your graphic work, you have to…

Create a small comic story about how you would behave if someone with a disability came to the Montessori
British School. Make sure your story is organized and understandable. Use annex 1 to create your story.

Remember the use of spray paint is not allowed, because it's detrimental for your health and the
planet.

For your oral presentation, you should keep in mind…

Once you have finished your presentation, the teacher might ask you some questions about the book:

● What was your favorite part of the book? Why?

● Why do you think August cut off his Padavan braid?
● What was the saddest moment in the story for you? Why?
● Why was Mr. Tushman´s last name so funny for August and his parents?
● Other detailed questions about the book.
4. Quiz What percentage of the
Reading Plan grade is
comprised by this activity?
20%
What is the purpose of the quiz?
Throughout the test, you will find different question types. You will be able to demonstrate that you read the book
by identifying events, places, characters, and relevant happenings. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to
analyze the message of the story, establishing a link between the literary work’s theme and the events taking
place in your own reality.

Quiz:
During the test you may find the following question types:

Reading Comprehension:
- Fill in the blanks.
- Multiple choice questions.
- Character descriptions and their role in the story.

Literary Analysis:
- Identifying the configuration of the text, perspective, types of narration, etc.

5. The Circle of the Word What percentage of the

Reading Plan grade is
comprised by this activity?
20%
What is the Circle of the Word?
It is an ancient ritual and a knowledge system of the indigenous communities that allows us to better understand ourselves
and the world we live in, be good listeners and communicators, resolve problems and conflicts more effectively, be more
conscious members of our community, live a harmonious life, respect our ancestors, and be aligned with nature, etc.

It is based on the following principles:

a) The Word. The Word is about being aligned with what one thinks, says, and does. A thought should lead to an order and coherence
in the Word, and an order and coherence in the Word should mean a coherent action. We must take good care of what we think
because the thoughts we sow or design are the words we will speak, and the actions that we will take.
b) Sharing. When we share the Word we engage in a dialogue and as a community find solutions to problems. We reach an agreement
without fighting or conflict, respecting each other.
c) Equality. The Circle of the Word is about equality. Everything we think we are, we leave it behind. There are no social roles. Everyo-
ne is equal. We all need to communicate with sincerity and respect each other.
d) Listening. While someone is speaking, whether for one hour or five minutes, we should be silent, listening. Listening is about being
in deep silence, being present, and not thinking about something else while someone else is sharing.
e) Non-judgmental. We are not judging what the other person is saying. There are two sacred baskets: “canastas” or “mochilas”. The
basket on the right is “of the heart”. It is where I (symbolically) “put” the words I like or agree with, or that I find to be useful. The
basket on the left is where I “put” the words I do not understand or that I disagree with.
f) The fire. I give what I think is not useful to the fire. The fire transforms it into wisdom, in a healing thought for me. Words heal.
When we speak from the heart, we heal ourselves.

The topics that will be studied in the circle of the word are:
In a group discussion, students will participate and will give their opinion regarding the following statement mentioned in the book:

Shall we make a new rule of life tonight: always to try to be a little kinder than is necessary?

Possible questions:

● Why did Mr. Tushman use this statement in his speech?

● Why didn't Julian want to follow this rule?
● Was Julian acting right towards Auggie?
● What was Via´s role in August’s life? How did having him in her life change her?
● Have you ever had a personal experience where you realized you should be kinder to other people?
You must print all the rubrics on the following pages.
Please bring them to class and hand them to your teacher. Plan Lector 2º
