OF RUSIKULYA RIVER CROSSING TOWER LINE AT- PANDIA,GANJAM. BERHMPUR, ODISHA.The sub-
soil investigation works were taken up by Maks Consultant, Satyavihar, Bhubaneswar,
Odisha. The proposed project site was an undulated roughly level ground.

OBJECTIVES OF THIS SUB SOIL EXPLORATION

The objective of this Geo-technical investigation is to optimize the foundation system
for proposed Project with-in the safe bearing capacity of the soil and allowable settlement,
It consists of the following
 Determination of type, size and depth of foundation- system by analyzing the soil
properties
 To suggest a conclusive recommendation for the type of foundation system to be
adopted which would be economically viable and structurally safe for the proposed
structures of the projects at the proposed site.
Limitations of Investigation
The scope of Geo-technical exploration is confined within the framework of
agreement and Technical specification of the client. All the field and laboratory experiments
has been carried out as per the relevant Indian Standard Code of practice. However the
direction of Engineer-in-charge of the Client has been given due emphasis.
Nature of investigation work
The over all investigation consists of the following:
i. Visual reconnaissance of the site.
ii. Field Work-boring boreholes and collection of soil and core samples
iii. Laboratory experiments, determination of soil parameters.
iv. Decision on foundation system to be adopted in the present case using Our
Engineering judgment, based on the current practice.
The detailed Geo-technical investigation work that was carried out consists of two parts.

FIELD WORK

1. SELECTION OF BOREHOLE

Two numbers of Bore-holes has been selected by the Engineer in charge in order to
obtain comprehensive sub-soil data for this site with a provision of borings up to 10.0
meters depth.

(I) BORING:
It is the main part of sub- soil investigation work as the soil samples were collected
for different tests at different levels. The sub-soil exploration work at the proposed site was
carried out by wash boring per IS: 1892 – 1979 .

2. STANDARD PENETRATION TESTS:

Standard penetration test plays a major role in sub- soil investigation
determination of safe bearing capacity of soil in non cohesive type soil ,particularly in non-
cohesive granular sandy soil and where the UDS could not be collected either due to non
cohesive nature of soil .The SPT tests were conducted as per IS: 2131-1981 respectively,
in different levels of the bore holes in a continuous manner using spilt-spoon samplers at
locations . The SPT sampler was lower inside the boreholes after drilling the required level
and is driven by a 65.00 kg. Hammer with a free fall of 750 mm. driving 450 mm in three
stages 150 mm each and the number of blows for each 150mm penetration for 2nd& 3rd 150
mm drive recorded as “N”. Refusal were considered for N>50.

4. COLLECTION OF SOIL SAMPLES

4.i. SPT Samples
For investigation Standard Penetration Tests conducted at different 1.50 m intervals
or at change of soil strata as per of IS; code in the bore hole & samples were collected for
laboratory analysis.

4.ii. Disturbed soil Samples

Disturbed representative soil samples in sufficient quantity from the borehole has been
collected at 1.50 m. interval for different tests. The soil samples collected were stored in
Polyethylene bags with proper sign and identification.

LABORATORY TESTS
The laboratory-tests were conducted on selected representative disturbed soil
samples collected from the Borehole drilled were at the proposed site. The tests include
Grain size analysis, Natural moisture content, D.F.S, Specific Gravity and Liquid limit, Plastic
limit, Plasticity index, Particles size distribution and compressive st. tests on representative
samples were also carried out. All the tests conducted confirming to the requirements of I.S
specification in the Laboratory approved by Govt. of Orissa. The results of all these tests
have been annexed separately.

1. GRAIN SIZE ANALYSIS:

The grain size analysis of different soil samples were done as per the requirement of
IS: 2720 (Pt-IV) 1985 – method of test for soil Grain size analysis.

The details of the test results has been shown test result sheet separately.
2. NATURAL MOISTURE CONTENT:
The natural moisture content were determined from different soil samples of the
Borehole at different depths as per IS: 2720(Pt-II)-1973: The results of all these tests has
been annexed separately.
3. DETERMINATION OF BULK DENSITY:
The Bulk densities has been determined from different soil samples of the Boreholes
at different depths in the laboratory from the soil samples as per IS: 2720(Pt-II)-1973.
4. DETERMINATION OF SPECIFIC GRAVITY:
The specific gravity of the soil samples has been determined at different levels as per
IS: 2720(Pt-III)-1980. The result of all these tests has been annexed separately.

Maks Consultant, Bhubaneswar. 6

5. LIQUID-LIMIT / PLASTIC LIMIT:The liquid and plastic limits of soils has been
determined as per the relevant as per IS: 2720(Pt-v)-1985 Code of practice. The results of
all these tests have been annexed separately.

6. DIFFERENTIAL FREE SWELL TEST:

The tests were conducted as per IS: 2720 (Part-40
& 41) 1977. It deals with the method of test for the
determination of free swell index of soil. Free swell is the
increase in volume of a soil without any external
constraints due to swelling of clays .It can be identified
at the outset by an investigation of those soils likely to
posse’s undesirable expansion characteristics. The results of all these tests has been
annexed separately.

7- DETERMINATION OF SHEARSTRENGTH PARAMETERS:

Unconsolidated and un-drained tests were carried out from soil samples collected as per Pt-
X , XI ,XII, XIII,& part-35 of IS: 2720 with three different cell pressures of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5
kg/sq.cm and result are shown separately in tabular and graphical manner.

8. BEARING CAPACITY
The supporting power of a soil or rock is referred to as its bearing capacity .The term
bearing capacity is defined after attaching certain qualified prefixes. The allowable N . S. B.
C / SBC of soil strata has been computed at different depth using SPT value “N” and index
parameters as per the requirements of IS: 2131 & 6403 – 1981 considering the shallow
type foundation at different depths with taking factor of safety ” f “of soil samples of the
bore holes at different depths. The result of all NSBC / SBC of all these tests has been given
separately.

In this bore hole it was seen that two layers i.e sandy clay & Sand has seen from top
soil level up to explored depth of 10.0 mtr. (The details of soil layer have been mention in
Field bore log chart). The SPT values “N” has not exceed the limiting value of 50 in this bore
hole. The N values show regular trend with different depth of bore hole. The DFS Values of
bore hole soil samples are lower with limiting zone. The allowable S. B. C of soil strata has
been computed at different depth using SPT value “N” , C, phi and index parameters as per
the requirements of IS: 2131 & 6403 – 1981 considering the shallow type foundation at
different depths are shown graphically below.

One number of Bore hole up to 10.0 meter depth below NGL were drilled to
determine the comprehensive soil data from test results in a realistic manner. From the
laboratory study of soil properties such as Grain Size Analysis, DFS Test, Specific Gravity,
S.M.C. and Waterberg’s limits shows a consistently increasing trend with depth. The average
values of the index parameters are shown below.

In this bore hole it was seen that two layers i.e sandy clay & Silty sand has seen from
top soil level up to explored depth of 10.0 mtr. (The details of soil layer have been mention
in Field bore log chart). The SPT values “N” has not exceed the limiting value of 50 in this
bore hole. The N values show regular trend with different depth of bore hole. The DFS
Values of bore hole top soil samples are lower with limiting value. The allowable S. B. C of
soil strata has been computed at different depth using SPT value “N”, C, phi and index
parameters as per the requirements of IS: 2131 & 6403 – 1981 considering the shallow type
foundation at different depths are shown graphically below.

RECOMMENDATIONS
NEAR RUSHIKULYA RIVER OPPOSITE SITE OF PANDIA
BH -02

Analyzing all the soil parameters from different angles it is recommended that:

 The Safe Bearing Capacity of soil are 4.0 , 10.0 , 10.0 ,15.0 & 17.0 MT/sqm at 1.5 ,
3.0 , 4.5 , 6.0 & 7.5 mtr depth from the lowest level of the existing NGL respectively
for structures.
 Isolated footing foundation with minimum size 2.00mtr x 2.00mtr has been

considered for computing the SBC value.

 From the analysis of the test result it is suggested that the type of foundation and

dimension of the footing for the proposed structure may be decided at the design

level ascertaining the test result of the bore hole presented in the test report.

 Shallow foundation will be designed as per IS: 6403-1981.

 Pile foundation will be designed as per IS: 2911.

 The Raft foundation should be designed as per IS: 2950 [Pt-1].

 All RCC works should be designed as per IS: 456-2000.

The effect of Wind, Earth-quake Land-Slide (possibility) if any should considered for High

rise building.
