1.0 INTRODUCTION:
1.1 PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Dr. Husain Kazmi, the Owner and the Client, is desirous to construct his
house at Plot No. 579, Street No. 19, Phase – I, Park Enclave, Islamabad.
Prior to the designing and construction stage of the proposed house, it is
found necessary by the Client and the Designer of the project to carry out
subsoil investigation of the proposed site to determine the geo-engineering
properties of subsoil and to ascertain the allowable bearing capacity for the
design of a safe, sound and an economical foundation. For the purpose, the
job of subsoil investigation was entrusted to Messrs SWIS-TECH, Engineers &
Contractors, Rawalpindi, by the Client’s representative.
-2-
The equipment and services were mobilized to the job site on 30-08-2022 and
the entire fieldwork was completed on the same day.
At this site, all three boreholes were drilled directly from the existing ground
surface with 5” dia Auger Drilling. BH-1 and BH-3 were drilled up to 20-ft,
whereas, BH-2 was drilled up to 25-ft depth. Standard Penetration Tests were
performed at 3-ft, 6-ft, 10-ft and thereafter at 5-ft interval up to the drilled
depth. During the course, soil samples were collected and preserved for visual
inspection and conducting the laboratory testing. All collected samples were
properly preserved, labeled and transported to SWIS-TECH laboratory for
conducting lab tests.
The entire fieldwork was carried out under the supervision of the Client’s
representative and an experienced Geotechnical Engineer on the behalf of the
firm.

SPT blows and N-values as encountered at site in three (3) boreholes are
given on appended Bore-Logs and also in the following table for a quick
reference:

-4-
The laboratory tests on the selected soil samples are performed on the basis
of subsoil encountered at the site to classify soil properly and to achieve the
best possible design parameters for the determination of soil bearing capacity.
-5-
Three locations were selected at the proposed site for the purpose of soil
investigation. Locations of these boreholes can be seen from the appended
Location Plan No. 6482-01. This site is approximately -3.50 ft down at BH-1
(right-front side) and -4.50 ft down at BH-2 (center) and -5.00 ft down at
BH-3 (left-rear side) from the adjacent street. These Ground Levels as
mentioned on bore logs have been picked up by eye judgment, and can be
confirmed at site, if deemed necessary for any precise work.
The study of Bore Logs, field and laboratory test results reveals more or less
uniform but quite complicated subsoil conditions in three boreholes. Subsoils
as encountered in three boreholes are explained as follows:
0’-0” / 6’-0”: Fill: Slightly reddish brown, slightly moist, soft, low
plastic, SILTY CLAY with sand (CL-ML) trace roots.
Apparently, is no sign of fill except roots and low N-value.
6’-0” / 10’-0”: Fill: Slightly reddish brown, slightly moist, soft, low
plastic, SILT with sand (ML) trace roots. Clean soil. No
sign of fill except roots. But this layer gives a susceptible
look. A low strength and unsuitable stratum for direct
placement of foundation.
10’-0” / 13’-0”: Fill: Slightly reddish brown, slightly moist, stiff, low
plastic, SILTY CLAY (CL-ML) trace to little sand. No sign
of fill, but a susceptible stratum.
13’-0” / 15’-0”: Fill: Slightly reddish brown, slightly moist, loose, fine-
grained, SILTY SAND. It looks like some old, deposited
material. May be a bank deposition of nearby nallah.
-6-
0’-0” / 5’-0”: Fill: Slightly reddish brown, dry, very stiff, low plastic,
SILTY CLAY with sand (CL-ML) trace roots. No sign of fill
except the presence of roots. Moderate N-value.
5’-0” / 10’-6”: Fill: Slightly reddish brown, slightly moist, soft to firm,
low plastic, SILTY CLAY with sand (ML) trace roots.
10’-6” / 14’-0”: Fill: Brown, slightly reddish, slightly moist, loose, fine-
grained, SILTY SAND (SM). Lumps of clay are also
present.
14’-0” / 15’-4”: Fill: Brown, slightly reddish, slightly moist, loose, fine-
grained, SILTY SAND (SM) trace gravel.
15’-4” / 20’-0”: Virgin soil: Reddish brown, slightly moist to moist, stiff,
low to medium plastic, LEAN CLAY (CL) trace sand.
20’-0” / 25’-0”: Reddish brown, moist, firm to stiff, low plastic, LEAN
CLAY (CL) trace sand.
0’-0” / 9’-0”: Fill: Slightly reddish brown, slightly moist to moist, very
soft, low plastic, SILTY CLAY with sand (CL-ML) trace
excessive roots. Poor quality stratum.
9’-0” / 14’-0”: Fill: Brown, slightly reddish brown, slightly moist, very
loose, fine-grained, SILTY SAND (SM). Lumps of clay are
also present.
14’-0” / 15’-6”: Fill: Brown, slightly reddish brown, moist to wet, loose,
coarse-grained, SILTY SAND with gravel (SM). Old river
deposition.
15’-6” / 20’-0”: Reddish brown, slightly moist to moist, stiff, low to low-
medium plastic, LEAN CLAY (CL) trace to little sand, fine
gravel and concretions.

5.1 After the study of bore logs, field, and laboratory test results and in the light
of discussion under the head of Nature of Subsurface, it is concluded that the
subsoil conditions in three boreholes are more or less uniform as far as
classification is concerned, but variation is noted in fills or weak soils depths.
This site is approximately -3.50 ft down at BH-1 (right-front side) and -4.50 ft
down at BH-2 (almost center) and -5.00 ft down at BH-3 (left-rear side) from
the adjacent street.
5.2 Fills of variable quality and nature are present at this site up to 15’-0”
(RL = -18.50 ft) in BH-1 (right-front side), up to 15’-4” (RL = -19.83 ft) and up
to 15’-0” (RL = -20.00 ft) in BH-3 (left-rear side).
5.3 Generally, fills found in BH-1 and BH-3 are of extremely poor quality and not
suitable for the direct placement of foundations even Raft. In fact, these fills
will not produce any stability with shall ground improvement. However, fills
found in BH-2 (central location) reveals slightly better quality fills particularly
upper 5’-0” (-10.00 ft) are of slightly better nature; in fact, looks like a quality
fill though material found is collapsible in nature and worst settlements can
still be anticipated on inundation. Situation is further aggravated by the
presence of Ground Water Table, which is found in BH-3 only at 15’-0” (RL = -
20.00 ft) but surprisingly not found in other two boreholes. Most probably,
this is some subsurface seepage from rear side are. These deeper fills are
present in an extremely poor condition; clearly suggesting the unsuitability of
this site for shallow spread foundations. However, foundation design can be
achieved with any of the following three (3) options:
OPTION – I:
DEEP REMOVAL & REPLACEMENT WITHOUT A BASEMENT:
Remove all poor quality and weak soils maximum up to 15’-0” from the
Lowest Existing Ground Level (LEGL) i.e. up to RL = -20.00 ft. Re-fill in 12”
layers with some selected Granular material with proper compaction up to
93% of Maximum Dry Density (MDD) at Optimum Moisture Content (OMC) by
means of some mechanical vibratory compactor.
SWIS-TECH Proposed House at Plot No. 579, Street No.19, Phase-I, Park Enclave, Islamabad.
-8-
Re-fill last 4 ft below the selected footing level with 6” layers and compaction
up to 95% of MDD at OMC. Then STRIP foundations can be designed with
0.75 Tonne/ft2, if quality of compaction can be assured. In case of any doubt
about compaction, better adopt RAFT. Minimum foundation depth must be
kept at 3’-0” from the Road Level.
OPTION – II:
DEEP REMOVAL & REPLACEMENT:
WITH A BASEMENT:
OPTION – III:
PILE FOUNDATION:
The simplest and the fastest option is the provision of Pile Foundations,
which is a speedy and problem free solution. Same can be provided with or
without a basement facility. Safe load carrying capacities for a single pile of
various diameter and lengths can be worked out, but that requires at least
two deep exploratory boreholes up to 60 ft depth. Due to extremely poor-
quality fills at BH-1 and BH-3, entire load will have to be borne by Piles. Load
sharing Piled-Raft cannot be provided. Raft can serve as a large pile-cap only.
Under the circumstances, this seems to be the most suitable option for the
proposed structure though may not be the most economical one. Table on the
following page is being provided for some initial design and estimate only.

OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS
FOR GROUND IMPROVEMENT:
5.4 Since ground improvement will be required at this site, it is better to provide
specifications for fill material and a general methodology.
5.6 An engineered fill should be a blend of different types of soil material, which
must be placed in 8 ~ 9 inches loose layers and then properly compacted at
least up to 95% of Maximum Dry Density at Optimum Moisture Content of
material as obtained from Modified Proctor Test to achieve a ready and well-
compacted 6” thick layer.
5.8 Filling operations require particular care as fills are most susceptible to
ingress of water. Loosely filled ground can soak up water and also erode at
rapid rate causing instabilities. All filling operations should involve proper
preparation and filling in small thicknesses of spread soil layers as
recommended with each layer well compacted / packed using rollers or
tampers. Well compacted ground does not soak up water easily and it does
not erode easily.
SWIS-TECH Proposed House at Plot No. 579, Street No.19, Phase-I, Park Enclave, Islamabad.
- 11 -
5.9 When working with fills or improved soils, always take extra measures to
minimize the infiltration of water into ground. This should include
maintaining excellent surface drainage, directing the outflow from roof drains
and other sources of water away from the building, avoiding excessive
irrigation of landscaping, and taking extra care to assure the watertightness
of underground pipelines.
OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS
FOR PILE FOUNDATION:
5.10 Use Pile Diameter ≥ 18 inches. Smaller dia piles can be failed due to
insufficient lateral support, also smaller diameters piles do not allow quality
concreting procedure through tremie pipes.
5.11 Lengths shown in the Table are not effective Pile Lengths but are Tip Levels of
Piles which can vary without or with basement. Effective Pile Lengths will be
calculated as follows:
Cut-off Level of Piles should be taken as the bottom level of Raft. Top & Tip
Levels must be mentioned on structural drawings to avoid any confusion.
5.12 The load capacity and deformation behaviour of drilled shafts can be greatly
affected by the quality and method of construction; thus, field quality control
must be assured.
5.13 High quality concrete of required strength and slump (minimum 8”) is a
primary requirement of quality finished Pile foundation. Concreting must be
carried out with tremie method.
5.14 Where the spacing between shafts is restricted, consideration must be given
to the sequence of construction to minimize the effect of adjacent shaft
construction operation on recently constructed shafts.
5.15 During the Construction stage, it is imperative to maintain bore logs of each
pile so that any serious variation must be noted and then addressed
promptly.
SWIS-TECH Proposed House at Plot No. 579, Street No.19, Phase-I, Park Enclave, Islamabad.
- 12 -
OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS
GENERAL:
5.17 Proper surface drainage system must be provided to avoid any change in sub-
surface moisture and great care must be given to underground pipeline
works. Proper lean concrete must be placed under the proposed foundation
and before laying it all loose excavated material must be removed.
5.19 This site is classified as Soil Profile Type SD. As per Revised Seismic Provisions
(2007) of Building Code of Pakistan, this area lies in Seismic Zone ‘2B’. Peak
horizontal ground acceleration for this zone varies from 0.16 to 0.24g.
Following seismic coefficients are recommended:
Seismic Seismic
Seismic Soil Profile Zone Factor
Coefficient Coefficient
Zone Type ‘Z’
‘Ca’ ‘Cv’
5.20 Stability of Vertical Cuts: Sub-soil conditions at this site are such that
stability of vertical cuts may cause some problems, if deeper excavation is
required, for example: for ground improvement or for a basement etc. Thus,
some temporary shoring may be required to keep vertical cuts stable or
otherwise some extra excavations or gentle slopes will be required to solve the
problem.
SWIS-TECH Proposed House at Plot No. 579, Street No.19, Phase-I, Park Enclave, Islamabad.
- 13 -
5.21 In case of extra excavation, same must be refilled with selected material with
proper compaction, at least, up to 93% of MDD at OMC as obtained from
Proctor Test. Extreme care will be required if some structure exists on
adjacent plots.
5.23 Proper lean concrete must be placed under the proposed foundation and
before laying it all loose excavated material must be removed.
5.24 Proper surface drains must be provided to avoid any change in sub-surface
moisture and great care must be given to underground pipeline works.
5.25 Should any conditions at the site be encountered during construction which
differ from those as encountered in investigation works, we request that we
may be notified immediately in order to permit a reassessment of our
recommendations, if require.

10.402 2.167 2) FAILURE MODE : This is also a very soft and wet sample. It has
10.760 2.209 certain bulging under self-weight, however, tested to have some idea. As
11.119 2.243 expected, low stresses are found. No apparent cracks, but stress dial
11.478 2.268 started reverse deflection. It is suggested to take qu = 0.60
11.836 2.284 kg/cm^2 for design purpose.
