1 INTRODUCTION :
M/s. Abeinsa Infraestructuras Medio Ambiente S. A. (Abeima) And M/s Bhugan
Infracon Pvt. Ltd. (JV) Mumbai. (MH) , have been awarded the Sewage Project at Nasrullaganj
M.P. M/s. Abeinsa Infraestructuras Medio Ambiente S. A. (Abeima) And M/s Bhugan Infracon
Pvt. Ltd. (JV) Mumbai has been appoint to M/S Beacon Infralab India Pvt. Ltd. to Undertake the
work of Geotechnical Investigation. The present report is about the results of one bore log
exploration at,
4.2 MLD STP at Nasrullaganj (07 No. Bore Log)
IPS at Nasrullaganj (01 No. Bore Log)
Scope of work for the present investigation includes boring at specified locations Excavation at
Site. During boring collection of disturbed/ undisturbed/ Core samples, carrying out field (SPT)
tests and laboratory tests on undisturbed, disturbed soil sample & core samples and submission
of report including recommendation for design of foundation for the proposed structure .The
geotechnical engineer and geologist of BILIPL have collected the soil samples from the
boreholes along with the other filed data. The location of drilling the boreholes was provided by
the officials of the client. The drilling, sample collections and Standard Penetration test was
performed in the presence of officials of the client.
2. Field Work
Boring:
Boring was done with the combination of rotary drilling technique. Flush joined steel casing
pipes were provided (when required) to prevent side collapse. The borehole depths & description
of Soil. N values from SPT and the depth at which ground water was encountered are shown in
table-1A to 5A of this report & test result of bore hole is shown in table-1B to 5B.
Sampling:
Undisturbed Samples, disturbed samples & core samples were collected at regular intervals. The
disturbed samples including penetrometer samples were collected and stored in polythene bags
after proper labeling. Undisturbed samples were collected in 100mm. diameter sample tubes. The
area ratio of each tube was kept within 14% to minimize possible disturbances during sampling
the tubes were scaled with paraffin wax at both ends, labeled depth wise and dispatched to the
laboratory for testing. The disturbed samples were collected from the cutting shoe of sample
tubes & split spoon sampler. Core samples were collected by core – catcher and stored in
polythene bags/core box after proper labeling.

Name of Project:- Soil Investigation Work for Construction of 4.2MLD STP & IPS Site, Under Sewage Project at
Nasrullaganj.
Standard penetration Test:-
Standard penetration tests were done within each borehole at suitable interval of depth shown in
the bore log data sheets. The tests were done with the standard split-spoon sampler as per IS:
2131. The N values were obtained by counting the number of blows required to drive the spoon
30cm in soil.
3. LABORATORY TESTS :
The soil samples were extracted from 100mm. diameter sampling tubes in the laboratory by
pushing out the soil core in the extractor frame with the help of a jack the core was jacked out in
a direction the corresponded to the soil movement within the tube during sampling. The
following test was carried out on soil samples collected from the boreholes:
a) Bulk Density
b) Natural Moisture Content.
c) Atterberg Limits
d) Specific Gravity.
e) Grain Size analysis.
f) Consolidation test.
g) Direct Shear Test.
h) Triaxial Test.
i) Swelling Pressure Test
For triaxial test 38mm. diameter x 76 mm. long specimens were obtained by jacking out
the soil. Core into the walled brass tubes, each having a wall thickness of 0.8 mm. The inside of
the tube was coated with a thin of silicon oil. To obtain specimens for consolidation test, the
odometer ring was placed on the trimmed horizontal face of the soil within the sampling tube and
the soil within the spatula as the ring was gently pushed into the soil the ring with the soil was
then removed by cutting across the soil core with help of a piano wire saw.
The laboratory tests as tabulated below were done to ascertain the engineering properties of the
subsoil and necessary data required for design of the foundation. In addition grain size
distribution & Atterberg Limits was carried out on samples collected from the shoe of SPT
sampler.
Atterberg limits and natural water content:
3
Name of Project:- Soil Investigation Work for Construction of 4.2MLD STP & IPS Site, Under Sewage Project at
Nasrullaganj.
Liquid limit. Plastic limit and natural water content of the silty clay/clayey silts. Samples were
determined (a) to classify the soil the M.I.T. classification system and (b) qualitatively asses their
constancy and compressibility of the soil samples.
Undrained triaxial test:
These tests were done on the silty clay /clayey silt samples to determine their undrained shear
strength. The cell pressure employed in the triaxial test was 0.5 1.0 and 1.5 kg/cm2. Then
samples were tested under quick condition at a rate of 1.25 mm/min.
Grain size analysis :
The grain-size distribution of some representative samples were determined from sieve analysis /
combined sieve and hydrometer analysis. The grain size distribution curve is shown in Fig.
Consolidation test:
Consolidation tests were run in floating ring type odometer. Under standard load increment.
Starting from 0.05 kg/cm2 to 8.0 kg/cm2 in general the soil samples were tested to represent in
relevant silty clay/clayey silt strata encountered.
Direct shear test :
These tests were done on the sandy soil to determine the angle of shearing resistance. The
normal stress uses employed in the test were 0.5. 1.0 &1.5 kg/cm2
Swelling Pressure Test
In case of soil having swilling properties swelling pressure test is conducted on the sample
collected from trial pits.
In case of rock is encountered at bore hole following tests were conducted on rock samples
collected from the site:
a) Specific Gravity
b) Water absorption
c) Crushing strength.
Core samples were collected from the rock strata. Diameter of the samples is 55mm. cylindrical
samples of length 110mm were prepared from these samples. Bulk density of these samples was
determined by taking weight of the cylindrical samples. Before determination of crushing
strength samples were saturated in water for 24 hours.
4. COMPUTATIONS OF SAFE BEARING CAPACITY
4
Name of Project:- Soil Investigation Work for Construction of 4.2MLD STP & IPS Site, Under Sewage Project at
Nasrullaganj.
(I) BASED ON SHEAR CONSIDERATION
The various kinds of shear tests are there but here we have performed the unconsolidated-
undrained (UU) tests were performed to get shear parameters for all samples. The Safe Bearing
Capacity is calculated as per IS: 6403- 1981 (determination of bearing capacity of shallow
foundations). For local and general shear failure the net safe bearing capacity is given as follows:
Qns = [C Nc Sc dc ic+q (Nq-1) Sq dq iq+ ½ B γ Nγ dγ iγ W]/F (In case of General shear
failure)
Qns = [2/3 C N’c Sc dc ic+q (N’q-1) Sq dq iq+ ½ B γ N’γ Sγdγ iγ W]/F (In case of local shear
failure)
Where qns = Net Safe Bearing Capacity
C = Cohesion (for Non cohesive material C = 0)
Ǿ = Angle of internal friction
Ǿ’ = tan-1(0.67 tan (Ø)) for local shear failure
γ = Average density of over burden
Nc,Nq,Nγ = Bearing Capacity factors for General Shear Failure
N’c,N’q,N’γ = Bearing Capacity factors for Local Shear Failure
Sc,Sq,Sγ = Shape factors
dc ,dq ,dγ = depth factors
ic ,iq ,iγ = inclination factors ( 1 in the case of vertical loads)
q = Effective surcharge at depth of” X” Mt below ground level.
W = Water Table correction factor is ½ (When WT is at base of footing)
B = Width of footing in Mts. (3.0x 3.0 m assumed)
F = Factor of safety considered as 2.50
The tests for determination of shear parameters are performed on undisturbed specimen.
The samplers were drawn in the boreholes and the undisturbed samples were collected wherever
possible and on these samples Triaxial Compression Tests were conducted.
