MINOR BRIDGE & MAJOR BRIDGES BETWEEN KM: 9.500 TO 18.5IN CONNECTION WITH THE
CONSTRUCTION OF NEW LINE BETWEEN DESHPRAN & NANDIGRAM FOR SE RAILWAY

1. INTRODUCTION
The subsoil investigations reported herein were taken up to find out the nature of subsoil at the
site of the proposed construction and to recommend the capacity and type of its foundation. After
certain tests on the soil, as detailed below, the desired recommendations have been start on
page 4 of this Report.

2.0 SCOPE OF WORK

2.1 To investigate the subsurface soil conditions at the proposed 1 one point is carried out at the
Construction area. The detailed scope of investigation for this site is as follows.
2.2 Setting up boring rig at each bore hole location and boring 150 mm diameter bore holes through all
kinds of soils.
2.3 Conducting Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) at an interval of 1.50m and collecting soil samples
from split spoon sampler.
2.4 Arranging all soil samples in the core boxes as per the borehole logging, labeling sealing properly
in sequence indicating number of SPT sample, depth, and number of blow of each SPT samples.
2.5 Transporting the selected soil samples to the laboratory for conducting tests as per the scope of the
work.
2.6 Analysis and interpretation of field & laboratory test data for the preparation of Geotechnical
investigation report.

3.3.2 Boring in Overburden

Boring was done in accordance with IS: 1892 -1979. Standard rotary type drilling rig
coupled with 8 H.P capacity diesel engines, which is fitted to a tripod frame and with all drilling
accessories was used for boring. The rig deployed was generally suitable for all Geotechnical
Investigation work and had an arrangement for driving and extraction of casing, boring and drilling by
mud circulation method. Collecting D/S, UDS, conducting SPT test with this rig was possible.
Rotary method of boring was used for boring in soil. Boring was commenced by driving a SX
casing. Boring was carried out in soil using 6” dia core barrel up to the top of the hard surface.
Diameter of the borehole in soil was 150mm. SX casing was lowered in overburden as boring
progressed. Advancement of borehole in soil was done by removing soil with help of water circulation
under rotary action of the Core barrel.
Boring in all types of soil was continued till the hard stratum was met with. Standard
penetration tests were conducted at an interval of 1.50m.
3.3.3 IN –SITU TESTS IN OVERBURDEN
During investigation Insitu tests were carried out. Standard penetration tests were conducted in
overburden. Undisturbed and Disturbed soil samples were collected by split spoon sampler in SPT test
for field observations and to determine the index properties from laboratory tests. The methodology of
conducting SPT test was described below.
3.3.4 Standard Penetration Test (SPT):
SPT’s were conducted as per IS 2131-1981.Disturbed Samples were collected through Split
Spoon Sampler at 1.5m interval. A standard split spoon sampler was driven at the bottom of the hole.
The penetration resistance in terms of blows for300mm penetration of the split spoon sampler was
measured as ‘N’ Value.
The blowswere imparted by a standard weight of 63.5 kg falling through a height of 750
mm.The resistance was measured for 150 mm, 300 mm and 450 mm penetrations. The resistance of
first 150 mm was ignored and the resistance of next 300 mm was recorded as standard penetration
value ‘N`. If the sampler was driven less than 450 mm (total) then the penetration resistance was given
for the last 300 mm of penetration. If the penetration depth was less than 150 mm and the blow count
was more than 50 then the ‘N’ value was considered as ‘Refusal’ or more than 100 blows for less than
30cms penetration.
3.3.5 INDIAN STANDARD CODES USED FOR THE FIELD INVESTIGATION
Field Geotechnical investigation was executed in accordance with the Indian standard
Codes listed below.
a) IS: 1892: Code of practice for subsurface investigation of foundation
b) IS: 1498: Classification and identification of soil for general engineering purpose.
c) IS: 2131: Method for standard penetration test for soil
d) IS: 6926: Code of Practice for Diamond Core Drilling for Site Investigations
e) IS: 4464: Code practice for Presentation of drilling information and core description
in foundation investigation.
f) IS: 10208: Specification for diamond core drilling equipment.
g) IS: 6935: Method of Determination of water level in boreholes.

4.1.1 Sampling
4.1.2 Undisturbed Soil Samples
Open drive samplers of 100-mm diameter and about 450-mm length were used for
obtaining undisturbed samples of cohesive soils. The collection, sealing, labeling and
transportation of the samples to the laboratory were done as per the IS guide-lines.
4.2.3 Disturbed Soil Samples
Disturbed soil samples were collected at suitable intervals of depth (not more than
2.5 m) and at all depths of change in the nature of the subsoil. These samples were
sealed in polythene bags with proper identification labels.

5. LABORATORY TESTS
Some or all of the following laboratory tests, as necessary, were done on the collected
soil samples. Representative soil samples were selected for this from the different soil
strata encountered during boring. The tests were performed as per the relevant Indian
Standard Codes of Practice.

(a) Natural moisture content

(b) Bulk density
(c) Grain size analysis (using sieves and / or hydrometer)

6. PRESENTATION OF TEST RESULTS
The field and laboratory test are given in the Appendix B.
7. SOIL STRATIFICATION

The one bore holes sunk at the site and the results of field and laboratory tests
conducted on the collected soil samples indicate that the soil stratification at the site
is as describe below.
The sub soil is Greyish Reddidh Silty clay, Grayish Silty Clay of type (CL)
up to the investigated depth of 20.0 m below GL.

Ground water table was struck 2.0m bgl in Nov-2023.

8. FOUNDATION ANALYSIS
The safe bearing capacity of foundation of any type and size may be determined on
the basis of the soil data given in this Report by using the standard methods of
foundation design and following the relevant Indian Standard Codes. In the present
case, shallow foundations may be provided.

9. RECOMMENDATIONS

RECOMMENDATIONS

The proposed structure may be provided with shallow foundation for special tower
structure for strengthening/disaster resistance as par soil bearing capacity, foundation
may be adopted for Bridge. (squre, strip,) & palin pile capacity.

The net allowable bearing pressure of a footing of any size and depth may be
calculated by standard methods using the relevant BIS Code and soil properties
reported herein.

The values of net allowable bearing pressures of foundations of certain sizes have
been calculated [vide sample of Calculation in Appendix - F] and are tabulated below.

2. Settlement Criterion for Foundation on cohesive soil.

As per IS:8009(Part I)-1976, Sec. 9.2.2.2, the settlement s (in mm) is given by the equation :

s = [1000 H Cc log (1 + p/ po ) ] / (1 + eo ) 

where H = thickness (in m) of the compressible layer
Cc = compression index of the soil
eo = initial void ratio at mid-height of compressible soil layer = its m/c ( m) x sp. Gravit

po = initial effective pressure at mid-height of the layer (t/m2 )

p = pressure increment at the mid-height of the layer due to the foundation (t/m2 ).
 correction factor

If there are different layers with different compression indices and void ratios, s is calculated for each
one of these and then added together to get the settlement.
The pressure increment at any plane due to the footing load may be calculated by assuming the
dispersion of load at a slope of 1 horizontal to 2 vertical. Hence the load applied over a width B of a
foundation (vide the Fig. below) is spread at a depth H/2 below it over a width (B + H/2 ).
A correction factor  0.80 is used as per IS Code to find the corrected settlement. If this value of
corrected s is within the permissible limit specified in the Code, the corresponding value of q ns is also the net
allowable bearing capacity qna. If not, trials give the desirued value of qna . One example of this settlement
analysis is given below the Table B in Sec. 3.
2 2
If Dw > (D+ 1.5 B/2), po = g (D+1.5 B/2) t/m , otherwise, po = g Dw + ( g - 1) (D- Dw + H/2) t/m

Dw = depth of water table below ground level .

D = depth of foundation
Dw B = breadth of foundation
D H = 1.5 x B = thickness of compressible soil layer in
B
the zone of influence of the loaded foundation.
Breadth of the influence zone at the mid-
plane of the compressible layer, of
