5.0 FIELD INVESTIGATION
Soil sampling has been conducted as per relevant I.S.1892-1979.
This consists of the following:
1. Physical observation and general survey.
2. Sinking of bore holes at specified locations using rotary drilling equipment by wash
boring technique.
3. Collection of Undisturbed soil samples as per IS 2132:1986
4. Conducting standard penetration tests IS: 2131-1981 at relevant depths.
5. Preparing bore logs of the Sub surface strata at specified location.
The field investigation consists of drilling 150/76mm diameter bore holes using rotary
drilling rig, conducting standard penetration tests and collecting disturbed and undisturbed
soil samples.
Standard penetration test consists of driving split spoon sampler for a length of 450mm
using 63.5kg drop hammer. The height of the fall of hammer is 75cm. The number of
blows required for 300 mm penetration of the split spoon sampler after allowing a seating
drive of 150 mm was recorded as N – value and termed as the penetration resistance N
(as per IS 2131). Samples in the split spoon sampler are collected for laboratory testing
SPT ‘N’ values are co-related with relative density of non-cohesive stratum and with
consistency of cohesive stratum. Co-relations are tabulated below

When rock was encountered, size of borehole was changed to Nx. (76mm) diameter. A
core barrel and Nx sized bits are used for drilling and recovery of rock cores. Recovered
rock cores were numbered serially and preserved. Rock core recovery and Rock Quality
Designation were computed for every drilled length of 1.5 m run.
Rock classification in terms of weathering and state of fractures and strength is carried out
in the following manner. Tabulations given below explain it briefly.

IN-SITU DENSITY AND MOISTURE CONTENT:

In-situ density as per IS 2720, Part-II is reported as the ratio of weight of undisturbed soil
sample to the volume of the sample is reported as bulk density.

Moisture Content test as per IS 2720, Part-II consist of determining the mass of wet soil
sample and then oven drying the soil for 24 hrs at 1100C

GRAIN SIZE DISTRIBUTION ANALYSIS:

a) Sieve Analysis is conducted as per IS 2720, Part-IV, in which the soil sample is
soaked in water, washed and oven dried for 24 hrs. After oven drying the soil samples are
passed through a set of sieves and the weight retained is recorded. A grain size
distribution curve is drawn on semi-logarithmic chart, plotting particle size against
percentage finer than the corresponding size on the ordinary scale.

b) Hydrometer Analysis is conducted as per IS 2720 , Part-IV , in which soil samples

passing 75 micron is mixed with water and chemical reagents. The mixture is poured to

1000ml measuring jar and stirred thoroughly. The hydrometer is immersed in water and

readings are recorded at subsequent intervals. Semilog graph is plotted with grain size in

x axis and percentage passing in y axis.

ATTERBERG LIMITS:

Liquid limit is the water content corresponding to the arbitrary limit between liquid and

plastic state. It is defined as the minimum water content at which a part of the soil cut by a

grooving tool of standard dimension will flow together for a distance of 12mm under impact

of 25 blows falling through a drop of 10mm.

Plastic limit is defined as the minimum water content at which the soil will just begin to

crumble when rolled into thread of 3mm diameter

Both tests are conducted as per IS 2720, Part-V.

UNI-AXIAL COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF ROCK:

The test is conducted as per IS 9143. In this test, the core sample is mounted on a
compression testing machine and loads are applied. The max load taken by the core
sample is referred as the uniaxial compressive strength.

SPECIFIC GRAVITY AND WATER ABSORPTION OF ROCK:

The test is conducted as per IS 2386-Part-III-1963. Density of rock:

The test is conducted as per IS 13030-1991.
DENSITY OF ROCK:

The test is conducted as per IS 13030-1991.

The summary of the laboratory test results of soil specimens performed are presented in
Laboratory Test Results (Table-1). All the above tests were conducted as per Indian
standards as specified in Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)
