Assignment 4
Problem 1. Consider the longitudinal dynamics of a long fixed-free bar with varying cross-
section described as A(x) = A0 (1− 2lx )2 , for 0 ≤ x ≤ l where A0 is the area of the cross-section
at x = 0, and l is the length of the bar. The bar is fixed at x = 0; assume the bar has mass
density ρ, and Young’s modulus E. Derive the frequency equation for the bar.

Problem 2. Consider a beam of length l, having mass density ρ, Young’s modulus E, cross-
section area A, and the area moment of inertia of the cross-section of the beam I. Using the
Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, show that the natural frequencies for fixed-fixed and free-free
boundary conditions are equal.
(Note: This topic will be covered after the mid-semester exam.)

Problem 3. Determine the natural frequencies and the mode shapes of the transverse vi-
bration w(x, t) of a taut string that is connected to massless rollers at both ends. These
rollers are supported at ends by springs as shown below. The string has mass density ρ,
cross-section area A, and tension T . Spring constants are k1 and k2 .

Problem 4. A uniform bar of cross-sectional area A, length l, and Young’s modulus E is

connected at both ends by springs as shown below. State the boundary conditions and drive
the frequency equation.
