Team Project Charter: Choosing a Community Organization, Setting

Responsibilities and Expectations

In this paper our team will discuss details relevant to fostering a healthy

environment in which to complete our assigned task of choosing a community or non-

profit organization to review and provide an executive review outlining our assessments

of that organization and suggestions we have for their strategy moving forward based on

those assessments. There are three parts to this initial document: first we have provided

three suggestions of organizations that we have agreed that we would be interested in

learning more about. Second, a team charter has been created that will outline our

expectations regarding communication and time commitments as well as consequences

when deadlines or other commitments are not met. Finally, we have broken down this

project into its weekly components and have assigned various parts of the weekly

deliverables to group members to ensure all members know up front what will be

expected of them.

Our Organizations

The organizations we decided to select were St. Jude's Hospital, the Salvation

Army, and the Public Broadcasting Company. The overwhelming majority of the group

chose at least one of these organizations in our initial discussion thread. These

organizations provide essential needs for humanity, such as medical care for children,

meals for impoverished families, and educational programs that foster diversity and

and Expectations 3
inclusion across America. Our goal is to highlight these organizations as life-changing

and saving non-profits that go above and beyond to support humanity.

St. Jude’s Hospital

The St. Jude organization puts the rights and lives of children above all else.

Always staying true to their founding principles, no child is denied medical treatment

based on race, religion, or a family's inability to pay for the services. Children are the

future of this fantastic world, and St. Jude's dedication to helping those that cannot fend

for themselves is a testament to human decency and our moral obligation to serve each

other. The hospital has done extraordinary work pushing the survival rate of childhood

cancer from twenty percent to eighty percent over the past couple of decades. We would

love an opportunity to dig deeper into how St. Jude’s Hospital functions from an

operational standpoint and its mission to save children from otherwise incurable diseases.

St. Jude’s offers humanity hope, and highlighting their achievements is paramount to

future generations.

Salvation Army

Salvation Army is a religious based non-profit organization based in London. Salvation

Army focuses on serving communities throughout the world through services such as

disaster response, human and sexual trafficking advocacy, and many more. The Salvation

Army is committed to serving everyone and has stated their stance on any sort of

discrimination in their mission statement. We are looking forward to the possibility of

getting to know the organization a little bit better and learn more about how the Salvation

Army can connect to so many different communities from an organizational standpoint.

PBS: Public Broadcasting Service

Team Project Charter: Choosing a Community Organization, Setting Responsibilities
and Expectations 4
The Public Broadcasting Service is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating,

inspiring, entertaining, and fostering diversity for the American public. PBS is creating

series to educate kids, documentaries to expand the minds of adults, and programs that

broaden perspective to name a few. PBS is a free broadcast for anyone in the United

States or any US territory. We believe looking at PBS would be good because of its wide

impact in the US. This organization is widely known and would be good to look at what

they are doing organizationally to be so successful.

Team Expectations and Project Plan

As with every type of collaborative project, communication between our team members

will be central to a successful outcome. It will be even more critical given that our

members are living in several different time zones with different family and job

responsibilities on top of those we have to each other in this class. The expectation for

team Innovation Strategists is that all members will communicate with each other in a

timely fashion regarding project assignments and that each person will ensure that their

contributions to each deliverable are made available to the group at least 24-hours before

the deliverable deadline. The following several sections will outline additional specifics

for how we expect to communicate with each other, what means we will use to

collaborate, how conflicts will be dealt with, and what consequences there will be for

team members who choose not to follow through with their assigned tasks. Finally, we

have broken our deliverables down into when they are due and who will be coordinating

each deliverable and who is responsible for what.

Communication Method(s)
Team Project Charter: Choosing a Community Organization, Setting Responsibilities
and Expectations 5
As a team, we will be using various forms of communication to keep track of our goals

and milestones. All the assignments have been uploaded into a google drive that any team

member can access. Since our introductions, we have discussed some of us are in

different time zones and have restrictions on availability; utilizing email and our

discussion threads will be the second form of communication throughout this class.

Finally, when appropriate, the team will use Zoom provided by Arizona State to discuss

any pending issues and upcoming due dates.

Collaboration Method(s)

Team collaboration will be crucial to the success of the assignment. Therefore, we have

chosen to upload all assignments into Google Docs for each team member to work on

specific sections before the due date. In addition, Canvas email and Slack are other

technological instruments that we have deemed essential and key to sharing respective

thoughts on the group's direction. Finally, over-communication will allow Innovative

Strategists to succeed during this remote project by setting deadlines and finalizing tasks

early enough for others to give feedback.

Conflict Management

The team will deal with conflict within the group setting as it occurs. However, team

members are strongly encouraged to connect with the individual they disagree with in

hopes of resolving the issue immediately. When the parties cannot find an agreed-upon

solution, another team member may step in and act as a mediator. The last resort will be

to request a zoom session with Professor Erwin to act as a higher-level mediator. Ideally,

Innovative Strategists should effectively handle conflict resolution within the group

setting by encouraging debate, meeting deadlines, and ensuring all team members are

and Expectations 6
adding value to the project. Refer to the team expectations and project plan for guidance

when in doubt.

Consequences of Non-Participation

Team members participating in the group assignments will be critical for our classroom

learning experience. Organizations are successful when there is strong collaboration and

cross-functional sharing amongst different departments. We should be no different as the

skills learned here can be transferred to work experience. Innovative Strategists expect all

group members to contribute to various capacities, and proper scoring will occur during

peer reviews. Individuals that fail to contribute any content to required deliverables will

only be rewarded with 75% of the points awarded. For example, if a paper receives one

hundred points from the instructor, any group members who did not contribute will only

receive seventy-five points. The team member responsible for turning in a deliverable

will let the instructor know of non-participation via email. Exceptions can be made if a

member is out sick or has a life emergency, such as childcare obligations, sick family, or

additional unforeseen circumstances. If participation gaps continue to occur, the team

will partner with Professor Erwin for the next steps in the grading process.

Conclusion

In this first part of our project, we have delivered to the instructor three non-

profit community organizations that we are excited to learn more about. We have also

created our team charter where we have outlined expectations for how we will

communicate with each other, the platforms we will use for collaboration, how conflict

will be dealt with, and what consequences await anyone who does not participate in this

process. Finally, we have broken down all weekly deliverables and assigned various

aspects of each assignment to the group members, so they know ahead of time what their

responsibilities are to the rest of the group.
