Worksheet Objectives:

2. Apply the human resource frame to your personal case situation

Complete the following making sure to support your ideas and cite from the textbook and other
course materials per APA guidelines. After the peer review, you have a chance to update this and
format for your Electronic Portfolio due in Module 6.

1) Briefly restate your situation from Module 1 and your role.

The situation I am examining occurred where I work. I work for a finance company as an
assistant and data specialist to a financial advisor. Close to the time I started I was left to
work independently fairly quickly, which obviously could lead to mistakes being made. I
had made multiple mistakes that came to light the same day. It was only my second week
there and it led to a stern and slightly insulting conversation with my boss.

2) Describe how the human resources of the organization influenced the situation.

The way people are treated and how they are utilized is the basis of the human resource
frame. How well you utilize the people around you can either benefit productivity and
quality of work or it can be the reason everything fails. I have seen misuse of the human
resource frame and I have seen it used for both good and bad within my company. Even
in this situation I have seen the good and the bad and how it could be used more
effectively.

To begin, the point of my boss’s correcting me was that if I could not fulfill the needs of
the role, we may need to reconsider my role. A wise person would think of this as finding
the right seat withing the company, but that was not what my boss was saying. He was
trying to say if I could not correct my mistakes, he would have to let me go. A harsh
consequence for minor mistakes made in the second week of working for the company.
Learning to help employees and building them up is how you utilize human resources in
a company. It never helps to tear down a person like was.

3) Recommend how you would use the human resources for an alternative course of
action regarding your case.

I think about the human resource frame and how it fits within an HR department within a
company. Many people confuse the frame with the department, and it is easy to do so. I
think it is because it is a tool available in situations like discussed earlier. That is the
thing. It is a tool and not the end all.

How I would have used the human resource frame is to use it the tools I have to my
advantage. I need to learn that the only things that should influence my decision making
are the things that I can control myself. I need to learn how to find the right role and
communication style that works with my boss. The issue comes from a lack of
communication because if I am just a number doing my boss’s work, we will not be able
to communicate. Taking a step back and learning how to function with the other human
resources available will lead to better productivity and quality of work and lead to a
better utilization of all human resources.

4) Reflect on what you would do or not do differently give what you have learned
about this frame.

In this situation, I would have taken a step back and understood the issues as a structure
or framework issue and not 100% my boss’s fault. I would have realized there is a gap
that needed to be connected and I would have been able to help be the change. What I did
was hide in my corner and do nothing. HR would not want people to do this. I also
learned this week that there are different types of organizations and people, and I cannot
change them. What I can do is learn how to work with them.

Since there is no strong HR influence in my department what I could have done


differently is have another conversation with my boss. I could have expressed how I felt
and how we could work together better in the future. This situation is in the past, but
there is always an option to do this in the future. We all have room for improvement, and
we need to learn how people operate so we can learn how to work together. If I learn
more about my boss and find a way to approach him, I hope to find a way to bridge our
own gap in the work needing to be done
