Gesture/Action Drawing

A loose form of sketching that attempts to capture your subject’s basic form and express
movement. Gesture drawing is the process of drawing the human figure quickly and loosely (but
it can also apply to any subject as well). Gesture drawings can be accomplished by using a
variety of lines, shapes, or entirely blocked-in figures.
.

I Gesture
Drawing

1. Stick Figure Approach- rapidly document an action pose

2. Silhouette Approach- draw the figure as a simple two-dimensional silhouette

3. Searching Line Approach- The “searching line” approach captures the pose with multiple lines.

4. Organic Line Approach- lines in a flowing, loose manner, but more selectively than in the searching
line approach

5. Contour Lines and Tones Approach- This approach is like the organic line approach, but it allows you
to use additional tones.

6. Anatomical Gesture Approach- indicate a few anatomical forms

7. Manikin Approach- a very simple figure as a preliminary structure, using geometric or organic shapes

II Lines of inaction and

Action

Action Drawing Lessons Action.—When the vital element of action enters the drawing interest is
quickened in the mind of the beholder. Generally speaking, action in pictures simply drawn is shown most
frequently by lines diverging from the horizontal and vertical. Thus, in Figs. 1 and 2 the lines on the left at
the bottom, including the curved ones (which are resting horizontally) convey the impression of rest;
whereas, similar lines at the right, being inclined, indicate unrest, or action.
