The Rise of Artificially Generated Art

Artificial intelligence, a term we have increasingly gotten ourselves familiarized

with over the passing decades. Be it from our pop culture to even our next door

neighbor. One could say that the invasion of AI has come and the end of humanity is

soo. But perhaps it wasn’t the killer robots our fiction had gotten us to believe but

instead something much more mundane.

Ranging from the different sectors of our workforce, we find various jobs being

automated by machines as time passes by. With the recent advancements of

technology, we find ourselves in a new frontier that challenges everything as we know

it. Ideas we had previously thought to be nothing but mere fantasy, now seem like a

plausible future. ChatGPT is a chatbot able to give very human-like responses to the

point it’s indistinguishable to most people. Midjourney, Dall-E, Stable Diffusion, and etc,

are neural networks made to create images with something as just feeding it with

prompts. Allowing a person to create artworks in a few minutes, taking only but a single

tap of a button. Surely, by now you’ve heard these things popping out of your circles

and news pages, but what does this truly mean for us? I’d like to answer the various

implications and effects such technologies will affect our future, well at least the AI art

side of things.
So what exactly is AI generated art? They are images created by inputting text into an

algorithm. But just how exactly does this technology work? The algorithm takes on a

bunch of images scraped from the internet so it can go under a process of deep

learning. In layman’s terms it’s basically the machine learning and assigning prompts to

various images it can use as reference. To which then, it uses a latent space, which is a

mathematical multidimensional space where the algorithm measures the likeness of an

image to the prompt. Once the algorithm does all these processes, can it then output

an image based on the parameters and prompt that had been set before.

This technology opens up multitudes of possibilities and issues to us humans. Now,

previously less skilled individuals can now have their ideas be released to the world as

this technology can ease the process of making artworks, and perhaps stories they wish

to create. With this, we can surely see an increase in the pace entertainment can be

created and released to the public. However, with all things in life, just as the amount of

good such technology can bring, harm can also be brought.

With the sudden rise of these algorithms, artists find themselves possibly being replaced

by such technologies. After all, just like how things were in the past, a lot of livelihoods

and jobs have been lost due to automation. Now with these things, people can create

artworks, faster than artists can. One can say that these technologies have yet to have

surpassed artists. To which they are right, but with the speed of how these things have

improved, I say it’s only a matter of time. Aside from that, a few ethical and legal

concerns have also come up due to the very nature of computer generated artworks.

Artists have found themselves wronged as the work that they’ve created has been

used without permission to very well create the thing to replace them.

Now comes the question that has been bogging your mind since the beginning of this
essay. Will AI art truly replace artists? And my answer for that, is that it’s too early to tell.

Perhaps in the very far future, that’ll be the case just as every other job in the past. Or

perhaps us humans will find handmade artwork to connect with us more. Whatever the

answer may be, it is still too early to tell as these technologies are still in their infancy,

and will only continue to improve more in the future. However one thing is for certain, is

that AI(Artificial Intelligence) surely has augmented our day to day lives.
