Asynchronous Work

Feb 21st
Course 5

Full Name: ________________________________________________________

Topic: Microaggressions and Discrimination Grammar: Wh Questions and Present Simple

Instructions:
For this asynchronous activity, you will work in pairs to create a mini-role play (dialogue) in which
you simulate a scene of offense and apology.
Step 1: Go to the following website and select one of the discrimination stories presented there
(choose any that you consider interesting): https://www.humanrights.vic.gov.au/get-help/stories/
Step 2: Read the story of the person and create a conversation/dialogue from that situation.
Simulate that one of you was the person discriminated and the other is a person who is going to
apologize for the offense committed (this other person is a character you invent: a manager, owner,
friend, representative, etc.).
Step 3: After you write the dialogue, RECORD (audio) the conversation with your partner using
classroom, wpp, or any other app to record audio.
Step 4. Send the WRITTEN dialogue and the Audio (recording) to classroom. Please highlight (in
yellow) the expressions used to apologize in the text.
EXAMPLE: (Abeeku’s story)

(So after you read the story, you invented this conversation)
Example Dialogue:
Mr. Coronado (student 1): Hello Mr. Abeeku, I’m the owner of the bar that
you used to play with your band in. My name is Mr. Coronado. How are
you?
Mr. Abeeku (student 2): Hello Mr. Coronado. Right now, I’m feeling angry
and very disappointed in your administration. I consider the response of
your new administrator was very offensive towards my race and ethnicity.
Mr. Coronado: I understand your anger, and I totally support you. Right
now, the administrator that denied your service is under investigation from
our human talent office. I wanted to call you to directly apologize for that
inconvenient and to ask you about how we could compensate it.
Mr. Abeeku: Yes, I don’t know why it happened. We have been playing
there with my band for almost a year. Everything was okay until your new
administrator came.
Mr. Coronado: I am really sorry, again. That situation shouldn’t have
happened. I would like to apologize to you and to all the members of your
band. I hope and wish that we can solve this situation and re-establish our
old agreement. Would you accept my apology and play with your band
here again?
Mr. Abeeku: Thank you for your apologies, Mr. Coronado, but I can’t accept
them until we are sure that this situation does not happen again. What
measures do you plan to take? How can we make sure we will be in a non-
racist environment?
(ETC…)
_____________________________________________________________________________
As you could see in the example, the idea is that you take the situation and adapt it to create an
apology.
Considerations:
- Use as many expressions of apology as you can (the ones you learned from the video
activity).
- Make the dialogue “dramatic” and “serious”. Don’t make it a simple apology. The situation is
delicate.
- Practice the pronunciation of the expressions before you record the audio. PRONUNCIATION
will be evaluated.
- The dialogue should last between 1:00 and 2:00 mins (max).
- Pay attention to the grammar in present simple (-s / -es / ies/) (do / does) (wh questions)
If you have any questions, let me know through wpp.
Don’t forget to upload both the dialogue (in text) and the audio (recording) to classroom.
The END.
