I. Introduction
Organizing ideas presented in a reading selection can seem like a tricky task. Sometimes
informational texts will include some really interesting or surprising information, but it is not
actually important. Sometimes readers think they can approach an informational text by
reading the information once and then moving on. However, one of the best ways to fully
understand and retain the information covered in a textbook, news articles, or scholarly
journal article is by arranging the ideas in an outline using your own words after reading a
certain text. It can give you an overview of the topic and enables us to see how various
subtopics relate to one another. Outlining the information in our own words tests our
understanding of what we read. It is an effective way to record needed information from
reference books you do not own. In this lesson, we will discuss how to organize or outline
ideas presented in various reading texts.

IV. Discussion
What is an Outline?
An outline is a summary that gives the essential features of a text. It shows how the
parts of a text are related to one another as parts that are of equal importance, or sections
that are subordinate to a main idea.
There are two kinds of outlines: the reading outline and writing outline. A reading
outline is used to get the main ideas of a text that is already written. It helps you understand
the text’s structure more critically because you will have to find the text’s thesis statement
and supporting details. You will better understand how a writer connects and sequences the
information in the reading text. Meanwhile, a writing outline is a skeletal version of your
essay. It is used as a guide to organize your ideas. It is usually done before you write the first
draft of your essay.
To extract most of the texts, you read for school, you need to identify main ideas,
important points, and details. This can be possible by using or making an outline.
1
The reading outline is a good way to create a visual picture of what you have read.
Writers often prepare an outline of their ideas before they write a complete paragraph or
essay. The process works in reverse. Readers look at each paragraph and identify the main
idea (in the topic sentence), important points (in the subtopic sentences), and the details.
Then, they usually write them down in the same order as the author wrote. Outlines provide
some benefits for readers because they pull out the important and interesting information in
one place, students remember better what they are reading, and it makes studying for tests,
easier.

Roosevelt visited Mississippi to settle a border dispute. In Roosevelt's honor, his hosts
organized a hunting expedition. To make sure that the president would bag a trophy, they
staked a bear cub to the ground so that Roosevelt's shot couldn't miss. To his credit,
Roosevelt refused shoot the bear. When the incident was publicized, large through political
cartoons, a Russian candy store owner named Morris Michtom made a toy bear out of a
soft, fuzzy cloth and placed it in his shop window with a sign reading "Teddy's Bear." The
bear was a hit with passersby, and teddy-bear mania spread rapidly throughout the
country. Soon, Teddy's bear was the country's most popular toy.
