Module 1: Lesson 3 – Roles of ICT in Teaching for Learning

Learning Task #3

Analysis
The journal article provided you insights on how ICT plays its role in education. Using the ideas you
gathered from the article-reading activity, what do you think are the roles of ICT for teaching and learning?
Write your answer in the box below.
Technology’s significance and adverse effects to the society has undeniably revolutionized
the way people live. Moreover, it poses both negative and positive impacts in education. As stipulated
in the article, the integration of ICT in today’s education setting made so much difference from the
traditional way of fostering knowledge during the past.

Firstly, the use of ICT in the practice of education made the teaching-learning process way
more fun, innovative, interactive, accessible and possible in any setting. Using devices such as
computers, mobile phones and tablets, students are able to explore and obtain knowledge and
information from articles, journals and any other learning materials that are readily available on the
internet. Teachers and students could also make use of programs and websites designed to make
learning way more convenient. In the context of the pandemic caused by Covid-19, education did not
cut out, though delayed for some time, but through the aid of ICT, classes resumed in a short time
through online learning platforms such as google classroom, meet, zoom, etc. Students learned while
teachers were still able to teach despite the distance. Another advantage caused by ICT to education
is it helps in the efficient production and delivery of lessons through multimedia platforms and devices
such as projectors, computers and the like. Through the internet, numerous online courses were also
made available thus made studying for those who wants to learn and earn degrees became more
possible and convenient. Now, even though a student is in the Philippines while the course he / she
wants to take is in Europe, and even if the student has to work and only have a limited amount of time
to study, learning is still possible. Through ICT, facilitating learning became more efficient.

Second, though there are many things that ICT contributed for the betterment of the education
system, there are still downsides present from it. The vulnerability of students becomes a risk as they
may be exposed to websites that contains malicious and inappropriate contents, they are vulnerable
to plagiarism and hacking and are unsure of the reliability of the resources of the articles that they are
accessing. Another downside of it is if uncontrolled, students may develop addiction towards the use
of social media platforms and gaming websites thus decrease their interest and time in studying. It
also hinders a learners creative and critical thinking skills in some way. Anyhow, these downsides can
be addressed by orienting users to follow netiquette and discipline in making use of ICT.

To sum up, ICT plays a vital role in the education system most especially in today’s time. May
it be on the side of the teachers and even to the students’. In my opinion, studying in a time where
everything is almost possible and is aided by technology is actually a privilege; only that we should be
responsible enough in handling it, thus make the most out of it for the purpose of the betterment of
everyone.
