Antipolo Campus Senior High School Department Earth and Life Science Name: Louise Andrey
Padecio Section: STEM 12-Y1-12 Activity 1 Digestive System and Respiratory System Respiratory System Materials: Clear plastic drink bottle (A 500ml bottle is a good size) Two balloons Tape (masking tape or duct tape) Procedure: 1. Measure an inch or two from the bottom of the plastic bottle and cut the bottom off carefully. 2. Take one balloon and put it inside the bottle. Then fold the bottom of the balloon around the rim of the bottle so the balloon hangs from the top. Wrap tape around the top of the balloon doesn’t seem snug around the bottle opening. You don’t want any air escaping, so make sure it is nice and tight. 3. Tie a knot at the end of the remaining balloon and cut the large part of the balloon in half horizontally. 4. Using the balloon half with the knot, stretch the open end over the bottom of the bottle. Again, this should be a tight fit. Use tape to secure if necessary. 5. Gently pull down the balloon from the knot. This should cause air to flow into the balloons within your lung model. 6. Release the balloon with the knot and watch as the air is expelled from your lung model. Guide Questions: 1. What happens to the balloon inside the bottle when your stretch the knotted balloon? What is the reason why the balloon inside the bottle reacts as you stretch the knotted balloon? The balloon inside the bottle represents what part of our respiratory system? How about the knotted balloon? 2. What happens to our lungs as we go deeper into the sea? How about if we climb a higher altitude?
Digestive System Procedure: Draw the digestive system of the following organism: Hydra Frog
Cow Chicken
Human Guide Question:
1. What are the organs that they have in common? What is the function of those? 2. What are the organs that are present only in a single species? What is the function of those? 3. Among the 5 organisms present in the activity which one is the most unique? What do you think is the reason why this species is so unique? Note: You can draw the specimen on separate paper and take a picture of your drawing. Place the picture in its corresponding box.
1. Mouth- where the food enters, Esophagus- passage way to the stomach, Small Intestine 2. Tentacle- For hunting prey 3. Hydra, because even this tiny organism has digestive system.
