In order to define an inverse function for each
circular function, restrict the domain of each function
to a certain interval I such that the following
properties will hold:
1. The circular function is one-to-one on the interval
I.
2. The function assumes all its possible values on the
interval I.
The Inverse Sine Function
The inverse sine function or arcsine function,
denoted by:
𝑓 !" 𝑥 = 𝑠𝑖𝑛!" 𝑥 or 𝑓 !" 𝑥 = 𝑎𝑟𝑐𝑠𝑖𝑛 𝑥.
Thus, 𝑦 = 𝑠𝑖𝑛!" 𝑥 or 𝑦 = arcsin 𝑥 , if and only
# #
if sin 𝑦 = 𝑥, where −1 ≤ x ≤ 1 and − $ ≤ y ≤ $ .
Examples:
Find the exact value of each expression.

The Inverse Cosine Function
The inverse of cosine function is
defined by 𝑦 = cos !" 𝑥 or 𝑦 = arccos 𝑥
which means,
cos 𝑦 = 𝑥, where −1 ≤ x ≤ 1 and 0 ≤ y ≤ 𝜋.
Examples:
Find the exact value of each expression.

The Inverse Tangent Function
The inverse tangent function is similarly defined
as inverse sine and inverse cosine functions.
In symbols, 𝑦 = tan!" 𝑥 or 𝑦 = arctan 𝑥 which
means,
# #
tan 𝑦 = 𝑥, where 𝑥 ∈ ℝ and −$ <𝑦< $

Inverse Secant Function
The inverse of secant function is defined by
𝑦 = 𝑠𝑒𝑐 !" 𝑥 or 𝑦 = arc sec 𝑥
which means, 𝑠𝑒𝑐 𝑦 = 𝑥 . The domain of
𝑦 = 𝑠𝑒𝑐 !" 𝑥 is x ≤ −1 or x ≥ 1 and its range is

Inverse Cosecant Function
The inverse of secant function is defined by
𝑦 = 𝑐𝑠𝑐 !" 𝑥 or 𝑦 = arc csc 𝑥 which means,
𝑐𝑠𝑐 𝑦 = 𝑥, the domain of 𝑦 = 𝑐𝑠𝑐 !" 𝑥 is
x ≤ −1 or x ≥ 1 and its range is

Inverse Cotangent Function
The inverse of cotangent function is defined
by 𝑦 = cot !" 𝑥 or 𝑦 = arc cot 𝑥 which means,
cot 𝑦 = 𝑥, the domain of 𝑦 = cot !" 𝑥 is ℝ and
its range is 0, 𝜋 .
