Exercise 1: Brainstorm and Phrasal Verb/Definition Match

1. Can you think of any phrasal verbs related to ‘holidays’ and ‘travel’?
2. The teacher will display some cards. Work in small groups to match the phrasal verbs and definitions.

The best way to remember new phrasal verbs is to learn them in context rather than memorising a long list
with definitions. It is important to practise using phrasal verbs in context as much as possible.

Exercise 3: Take turns to ask & answer questions with your partner. Choose at least 10 questions.

4. Have you ever travelled to a far-away destination? Did you have to stop over in another country on
the way? How long did you have to wait for the next flight?
5. When you were younger, did your parents used to drop you off and pick you up at school, or did you
take public transport?
6. How far in advance do you pack up before you go on holiday?
7. Do you get nervous when your plane takes off or touches down?
8. Has a flight you have taken ever been delayed? How long were you held up?
9. Do you take a lot of photos while travelling, or do you prefer to relax and take in the views?
10. Is there anywhere you have visited before that you would go back to? Where?
11. Do you spend a lot of time looking around the local area when you go on holiday, or do you prefer to
spend your time at the beach?
12. Do you usually eat out while on holiday? Do you like to try the typical local dishes?
13. Are you planning to get away for a holiday or a city break this year? Where are you going?
14. Do you prefer doing activities and sports on holiday, or would you rather chill out on the beach?
15. When did you first travel without your family? Did they see you off at an airport or train/bus station?

Exercise 4: Complete the phrasal verbs in the sentences with the missing prepositions.

Step 1: • Let’s talk about… Your Last Holiday

- Elicit any phrasal verbs related to holidays and • A Break in the City (-ed endings)

Step 2:
- Give a set of cards from exercise 1 (A) (page 3) to every group of 2-4 students or display page 3 on your
device for online classes.
- Students match the phrasal verbs with the correct definitions.
- Monitor the students as they complete the task, highlighting any mismatched cards for them to review.
- Elicit answers, giving further examples and explanation where required.

Step 3:
- Give a set of cards from exercise 1 (B) (page 4) to every group of 2-4 students or display page 4 on your
device for online classes.
- Students match the phrasal verbs with the correct definitions.
- Monitor the students as they complete the task, highlighting any mismatched cards for them to review.
- Elicit answers, giving further examples and explanation where required.

Step 4:
- Students complete the sentences in exercise 2, using the correct phrasal verbs in the appropriate tense.
- You may want to pre-teach a fear of flying, sip, be dying to, sample, sightseeing, and shuttle bus.

Step 5:
- Students complete exercise 3 to practise using the phrasal verbs in context.
- You may want to pre-teach charge and in advance.

Step 6:
- Students work individually on exercise 4, completing the phrasal verbs with the missing prepositions.
- You may want to pre-teach filthy, terrace, turbulent, souvenirs, a change of scenery & fasten your seatbelt.

Optional Revision Exercise: (This could be used another day.)


- Students revise the meaning of the phrasal verbs in one of the following ways:
a) Reading the definitions only and trying to remember the phrasal verbs that match them without
looking at the phrasal verb cards.
b) Choosing a phrasal verb card and trying to remember the definition without looking at page 2.
c) Choosing a phrasal verb card and trying to use the phrasal verb correctly in a sentence.
