SCHEMATIC DIAGRAMS AND SERVICE NOTES
BC-348-R RECEIVER
by Miles B. Anderson, K2CBY

Sag Harbor, New York 11963

INTRODUCTION
The following schematic diagrams are specific to the BC-348-R receiver. However, they are
generally applicable to the BC-348-H, BC-348-K, and BC-348-L (28-volt power supply), and the BC-
224-F, BC-224-K (12 volt) models. They should be used in conjunction with the diagrams and parts list
contained in T.O. 12R2-3BC-112, AN 16-40BC224-2, or other military manuals covering this series,
which they are intended to compliment, rather than replace.
These drawings were produced in response to three perceived drawbacks to the military manu-
als: (a) many of the components are mounted on terminal boards, and the schematic must be used
along with one or more of the wiring diagrams find a given component; (b) the schematic itself, particu-
larly the bandswitched stages and the AVC/OFF/MVC switch connections, is difficult to read; and (c)
the wiring diagram makes sense only when used with the terminal board diagrams, which are them-
selves hard to decipher.
In the following pages, each stage of the receiver is diagrammed on a separate 8½ x 11-inch
sheet, showing the interconnections between adjacent stages. There are separate pages covering the
power supply bus, the MVC bus, the AVC bus, and the terminal board wiring.
I decided to do nothing about the confusing practice of designating components by part number
rather than the more customary C1, R1 system. To do so would just add a complication and make it
impossible to correlate these drawings with the military tech manual.
I departed from this convention in one respect. The original schematic representations of the
bandswitch in the RF, Converter and HF Oscillator stages look more like a garden trellis than a circuit
diagram. Band 1 (200 to 500 kHz) is unique, and I retained the original component designations for the
redrawn schematics. For bands 2 through 6, I used the C1, R1 convention to diagram these stages,
attaching a table showing the component values and part numbers corresponding to each.

GENERAL NOTES
For a receiver designed in the late-1930s, the BC-348 is a remarkable accomplishment and rep-
resented the state of the art into the immediate post-WWII era. Not only was it technologically ad-
vanced, but it was constructed using premium grade components, a cast aluminum chassis for stability,
and ample shielding. There are, however, several features that deserve mention.
B minus. The first thing anyone will tell you about a BC-348 is that the B- power supply con-
nection is not at chassis ground. Instead the current flowing through a power supply choke (123B, part
of the audio output transformer) is used to develop bias on the 6K6 output tube. This was not a particu-
larly unusual feature in receivers of that era, but the fact that an ac power supply has to be mated to the
receiver calls it forcefully to the user’s attention. Connection of the B- lead directly to the chassis won’t
result in disaster – just badly distorted audio and a very warm 6K6. Coil 123B has a dc resistance of
about 250 ohms. With a current draw of about 65 mA for the receiver as a whole, the bias should be
16.25 volts. If you measure much more than this and there is a leaky capacitor somewhere.
B plus. All sorts of BC-348 ac power supplies have been described in the literature. The ideal
operating conditions are an output of about 230 volts at 65 mA, with plenty of filtering to avoid hum. All

-1-
of the internal capacitors are rated at 250 volts or more, but they are at least 70 years old. The receiver
will work fine with B+ as low as 180 volts, so bleed the power supply down to not more than 230 volts.
The annexed drawings are premised on a B supply of 227 volts (B+ to B-) at 65 mA, with -17
volts (B- to chassis ground) and +210 volts (B+ to chassis ground).
Filaments. To operate the filaments in their original configuration requires 28 volts at 0.95 A.
Rewired for 6.3 volts with the voltage dropping resistors out of the circuit, the current draw is 3A.
Muting. The BC-348 was designed to be muted when its associated transmitter (a BC-375 or
an ART-13) was keyed. This was accomplished by interrupting the screen voltage supply with a relay.
To use the receiver alone, pins 2 and 6 of the power plug (part 222) must be strapped.
“Volume”. The control labeled “INCREASE VOL.” is both an AF gain (79-B) and an RF gain con-
trol (79A), operating on the cathode bus connected to the 1 st and 2nd RF and the 1st and 2nd IF amplifi-
ers. The AF gain portion of the control operates only when the AVC is activated. The RF gain control is
active only in the MVC mode.
RF Section. The BC-348R covers six bands, and the RF section, consisting of the 1st and 2nd
RF Amplifiers, the Converter, and the HF Oscillator, feature an elaborate bandswitching arrangement of
coils and capacitors. The tuned circuits covering medium frequency band (Band 1 – 200 to 500 kHz)
differ considerably from Bands 2 through 6, and I have diagrammed Band 1 on a separate page for
each stage. The circuits for the higher frequency bands are essentially the same. For these I have pro-
vided a generic diagram (with parts identified as “C1, L1, C2, L2”, etc.) together with a table showing
the corresponding original part numbers for each band.
Variable gain with frequency. As explained in the Army/Air Force tech manual, a potentiometer
(78) is linked to the tuning capacitor reducing the gain (by increasing the cathode voltage of the 1 st RF
amplifier) as the frequency is increased to lower the noise level. Other receivers may have used this
system, but this is the first I have encountered. Contacts 10 and 11 on wafer 130 of the bandswitch
short the pot in the Band 1 position, but it is operative on Bands 2 – 6.
Audio output. The output transformer (123A) has two taps. The high impedance tap (pin 6) rat-
ed at 4000 Ohms and should be used with 2000 Ohm headphones. The low impedance terminal (pin 5)
(300 Ohms) is for 600 Ohm headphones. A typical loudspeaker (4 or 8 Ohms) will require the use of a
matching transformer.
Color coding. All the wiring is white with a colored tracer. For the most part, it follows the con-
vention shown below, but this should not be relied upon. In particular, black should not be assumed to
be at ground potential; most often it is not grounded.
Brown AVC bus
Red High voltage bus
Orange Screen connections
Yellow Filaments
Green Cathode connections to MVC bus
Blue Plate connection to AF and IF transformers

Wire colors seem to have been selected for ease in wiring subassemblies, such that no two
wires were the same color unless they were interconnected. Violet was not used, and gray is referred to
as “slate” in the original manuals.

In preparing the accompanying diagrams wire colors were denoted by numerals inside brackets [*], us-
ing the standard EIA designation system:

Resistance values are shown in Ohms, k = 1,000, Meg. = 1,000,000. Whole number capacitance val-
ues are picofarads (pF); decimals are microfarads (µF).
Capacitors. The BC-348 uses four types of fixed capacitors.
The large, metal-cased capacitors standing upright at the rear of the chassis (part nos. 48- and
49-) are 0.5 µF 250 Volt paper types. These appear to be durable, trouble-free and are used for power
supply decoupling and other non-critical applications.
The second type are “postage stamp” micas (part nos. 12- through 41). Again, they are durable,
long-lived, and appear to have retained their original characteristics despite their age.
Six ceramic capacitors (42 through 47) are used for temperature compensation and also seem
unaffected over time.

-3-
This leaves the most common type, the eighteen .01 µF 500 Volt “postage stamp” paper capaci-
tors that are scattered throughout the set and used primarily in plate, screen and cathode bypass appli-
cations. Experience has shown that these have a nasty habit of deteriorating, generally taking out any
associated voltage dropping resistor. With this in mind, a random sample of five was pulled out for test-
ing.
Subjected to an ohmmeter check with a Simpson 260, one showed a resistance of 650k. The
remaining four all tested above 3 Meg and one went to infinity. While hardly spectacular, these results
might be marginally acceptable in a non-critical application.
An electronic capacitance meter showed values ranging from 21 nF to 75 nF (.02 to .075 µF),
bearing little relation to the specified value of 10 nF.
An EICO Model 950B R-C bridge, on the other hand, showed a far different result. None of the
five tested would produce a null of the bridge circuit. Four of the five showed unacceptable leakage
above 50 volts, and the remaining one bowed out at 80 volts.
The final test was to apply 250 Volts dc and measure the resulting current. The result was noth-
ing short of alarming. Two capacitors showed a bit over 200 µA and a third 420 µA. The other two,
however, produced current that steadily rose, reaching a peak of 40 milliamperes, when the test was
terminated. (The entire BC-348 is supposed to draw only 40 to 50 mA when operating.)
The only reasonable conclusion is to replace each and every one of them.
The good news, if there be any, is that none of the offending capacitors is located inside the An-
tenna, RF Amplifier, Converter or HF Oscillator compartments, so these do not have to be removed.
For the most part, they are on the back sides of circuit boards 271 through 274 and the two small circuit
boards either side of the dial lamp rheostat. It is easiest to clip the lead as it passes over the top edge
of the board and then physically yank the capacitor off its other lead with a pair of pliers, being sure the
remaining pigtail doesn’t short to anything else. The capacitor can be replaced with a much smaller .01
µF 500-Volt ceramic capacitor wired to the front terminals.

ALIGNMENT
The alignment procedure outlined in the tech manual is accurate and produces the desired re-
sult, but the description is a bit sketchy.
The controls should be initially set up as follows:
DIAL LIGHTS Any position
CW OSC. OFF
CRYSTAL OUT
BAND SWITCH 200 TO 500 KC
ANT. ALIGN Arrow pointing straight up
AVC-OFF-MCV MVC
INCREASE VOL. Fully clockwise or the highest setting
that has an acceptable noise level
BEAT FREQ. Arrow pointing straight up
TUNING 200 KC or the lowest frequency free of
interference
A pair of medium- (600 Ω) or high-impedance (2000 Ω) headphones should be jacked into the
receiver, corresponding to the transformer tap to which the phones jacks have been connected. (Low
impedance 8-Ohm “hi-fi” phones should not be used.)

-4-
It is best to connect an ac voltmeter, output meter or oscilloscope between pin 5 (4000-Ohm im-
pedance) of the output transformer and ground, although the headphones alone will suffice as an out-
put indicator. Except for making quantitative measurements, it is not necessary to terminate the audio
output with a resistive load.
IF Alignment. Terminate the signal generator with an appropriate (usually 50 Ω) load so that the
output attenuator will be effective and connect it to the plate cap of the Mixer (VT-91, 6J7) through a
series capacitor. The tech manual suggests 0.1 µF, but anything down to 500 pF will work.
Each of the IF transformers has two adjustments. The input side (adjust first) is a slotted 6-32
brass screw accessible (but see below) from the under side of the receiver. The output side is a slotted
¼-inch tube accessible through a hole in the top of the shield can. (Most alignment tools aren’t this
wide, but since the adjustment is made at the end of the tube, an ordinary metallic screwdriver will work
without influencing the adjustment.)
There is very little interaction between primary and secondary tuning, but best practice dictates
tuning the primary first, then the secondary, and returning to the primary for a last “tweak.” If the prima-
ry is found off resonance, repeat the process.
Since the chassis must otherwise be flipped over, it will be easier to rest the receiver on its side
(RF section downward) to adjust the IF transformers.
Begin with the input side of the 1st IF, accessible through a hole cut in a shield at the underside
of the chassis. Tune the primary coil slug for a peak. Then, approaching from the opposite side of the
chassis, tune the secondary.
The IF can marked “Crystal Filter” (part no. 118) has only one slug, accessible from the top and
tunable with a 3/16 nut driver. Peak it.
Proceed to the 2nd IF, and the fun begins. The primary coil slug lies beneath the AVC-OFF-MVC
switch and the nest of wires going to it. It is possible to thread a thin alignment tool through or past the
obstacles to reach the threaded shaft, but it isn’t easy. The alternative is to detach the switch from the
front panel (with power off) and reposition it so as to provide access to the shaft while at the same time
preventing the dangling switch from shorting against another component. Once the primary is adjusted,
tuning the secondary is easy.
The 3rd IF is easily accessible from both sides; no more need be said.
The 4th IF transformer should be tuned in the manner shown in the tech manual, with the signal
generator set to 910 kHz and connected to the grid of the 2 nd IF (VT-70, 6F7).
Optional Extra. Tuning the IFs to 915 kHz is something of a rough cut, but it is adequate in
most circumstances because the passband is fairly wide. To achieve Nirvana, however, the entire IF
chain may be retuned to the series resonant frequency of the crystal.
Turn the CRYSTAL switch to ON. Rock the signal generator from side to side until the output
peaks, increasing the rf amplitude until a signal is heard. Tune the generator for a peak; then lock the
generator at this frequency.
Repeat the entire IF alignment at the center frequency of the crystal filter (f x). Adjust the 4th IF at
fx – 5 kHz rather than 910 kHz.
BFO Adjustment. The BFO requires two adjustments: (a) The front panel knob must be set so
that the 12 o’clock position corresponds to the point where the variable capacitor (part no. 9) is half way
between its maximum and minimum values. The tuning slug of part no. 212 is then adjusted to place
the BFO in the center of the passband.
With the signal generator set to either 915 kHz or f x without modulation, turn the BFO switch on
and listen for a signal in the headphones. Rotate the BFO knob until an audio tone can be heard. (If

-5-
there is no tone even though the BFO is operating it is necessary to adjust the tuning slug in the BFO
coil (part no. 212) shield can at the top of the chassis.
Once a tone is heard, rotate the knob in either direction to the point where the frequency is
highest. Loosen the two set screws holding the knob to the shaft and, without disturbing the shaft, ori-
ent the knob so that the arrow points straight to either the right or the left (i.e., 90° from the vertical) and
tighten the set screws. Turn the knob so that the arrow points straight up. Then adjust the slug until the
BFO zero beats the signal generator.
RF Alignment. RF alignment consists of setting the tuned circuits of the HFO, 1st RF, 2nd RF
and converter so they resonate at the high frequency end of each of the six bands. In the case of
Band 1 (200 to 500 kHz), the HFO must also be set at the low end. With the exception of Band 1, all RF
alignment is carried out by adjusting a capacitor at the high frequency end of each band. The coils in
each instance are fixed-tuned. Use of a high intermediate frequency is a great advantage because it
minimizes the chance of tuning to an image by mistake.
Mechanically, RF alignment is easier than alignment of the IF stages because the adjustment
points are more readily accessible. Electronically, it may present some difficulties, but these are con-
fined to Band 1.
The oscillator adjustment on Band 1, requires an adjustment at 200 kHz as well as 500 kHz, but
many modern signal generators won’t tune below 500 kHz. What to do?
Other than borrowing a URM-25 or something of similar vintage that provides the required cov-
erage, a “cheap and dirty” fix is to couple the signal generator to the grid of the 3 rd IF tube (VT-93, 6B8)
through a capacitor. Tune the generator to 1115 kHz (200 kHz + the 915 kHz IF) with no modulation.
Then adjust part no. 10 (underside of the chassis) to zero beat.
A second alternative is to use a function generator. Most of them will tune to at least 200 kHz,
and many can be amplitude modulated. Third choice is a wide-range audio oscillator, but this will yield
only an unmodulated signal. Finally, you can use the harmonic of a 100 kHz crystal calibrator. If your
source is an unmodulated signal, you will need something other than headphones or an ac voltmeter to
measure the detected signal. A VTVM connected to pin 4 or pin 5 of the third IF (VT-93m 6B8) will suf-
fice.
The 1st RF, 2nd RF and converter stages are adjusted at the high end only, so the HF oscillator
alone requires adjustment at 200 kHz.
The remainder of the rf adjustments are made conventionally. Connect the modulated signal
generator to the antenna terminal of the receiver. (It may be more convenient to make the connection
on the under side of the receiver to the pigtail that connects the antenna binding post to the tuning ca-
pacitor.) No series blocking capacitor is needed.
Beginning with Band 1 (500 kHz), tune the receiver and the generator to the same frequency.
Adjust the HF oscillator to produce maximum audio output. Then peak the 1 st RF, 2nd RF and converter
stage tuned circuits, in that order. Shift to 3.5 MHz for Band 2, 6.0 MHz for Band 3, 9.5 MHz for Band 4,
13.5 MHz for Band 5 and 18.0 MHz for Band 6.
