* Cách dùng:

- Nói một hành động đã xảy ra và hoàn tất trong quá khứ, kết quả không
còn lưu đến hiện tại.

VD: Last summer, my family and I went to Sam Son for our holiday.

- Nói một chuỗi những hành động diễn ra liên tiếp trong quá khứ.

VD: Yesterday, I got up at 5 o’clock. I did morning exercise for 15

minutes. I brushed my teeth and washed my face and then I went to
school.
- Nói lên những sự kiện mang tính lịch sử.

VD: President Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence at

Badinh Square on Sep 2nd 1945.

- Nói một hành động xen giữa hoạt động khác trong quá khứ.

VD: They were playing football when it rained.

* Dấu hiệu nhận biết thì quá khứ đơn:

- Khi dùng thì quá khứ đơn, người nói chỉ nghĩ về quá khứ mà không
quan tâm tới kết quả của hành động ở hiện tại ra sao.

- Thường có các trạng từ chỉ thời gian đã hoàn tất trong quá khứ đi kèm:

yesterday (hôm qua),

the day before yesterday (hôm kia),

last week, last month, last year,

20 years ago (20 năm trước),

when I was young (khi tôi còn trẻ),

when I was 6 (khi tôi 6 tuổi),...

at first (lúc đầu)...

Quy tắc đọc âm “-ed”

- Với những từ tận cùng bằng “t” hoặc “d”, đọc là “id”

- Với những từ tận cùng bằng /s/ -ce, ss, ch, sh, x, k, p, /f/ (gh) =>
âm -ed đọc là /t/

- Với những trường hợp còn lại thì đọc là /d/
