TUTORIAL 5 Plane motion of Rigid Bodies: Forces and Accelerations BCE/II/I

1. A uniform rectangular plate has a mass of 5 kg and is held in position by three ropes as
shown. Knowing that ϴ=30°, determine, immediately after rope CF has been cut,
a. the acceleration of the plate [( a ) 4.91 m/s2 >210
b. the tension in ropes AD and BE. [AD: 31.0 N; BE: 11.43 N.]

2. Each of the double pulleys shown has a mass moment of inertia of 20kgm 2 and is initially
at rest. The outside radius is 400mm. and the inner radius is 200mm. Determine (a) the
angular acceleration of each pulley, (b) the angular velocity of each pulley after point A on
the cord has moved 3m. [7.85rad/s2,15.35rad/s:6.77,14.25; 4.46,11.57; 5.95,9.44 ]

3. The flywheel shown has a radius of 600 mm, a mass of 144 kg and a radius of gyration of
450 mm. A 18-kg block A is attached to a wire that is wrapped around the flywheel, and
the system is released from rest. Neglecting the effect of friction, determine
a. the acceleration of block A, [1.784m/s2]
b. the speed of block A after it has moved 1.8 m. [2.53m/s]

4. The weight and radius of friction disk A are W A=5.4kg and rA=15.2cm. the weight and
radius of friction disk B are WB=2.7kg and rB=10.2cm.the disk are at rest when a couple
M of moment 84.7Ncm is applied to disk A. assuming no slippage occurs between the
disk,determine:
a. The angular acceleration of each disk [8.94 rad/s 2 cw ; 13.42 rad/s2 ccw].
b. The friction force that disk A exerts on disk B [ 1.85N ]

5. Solve the previous question (qn 4) assuming that the couple M is applied to disk B.
[13.42 rad/s2 ccw; 13 rad/s2 cw; 8.3N]

6. A uniform slender rod of length L =900mm. and mass m=1kg hangs freely from a hinge
at A. If a force P of magnitude 3.5 N is applied at B horizontally to the left (h = L),
determine
a. the angular acceleration of the rod, [11.67rad/s2]
b. the components of the reaction at A.[1.75N ; 9.81N ]

7. A drum of 80mm radius is attached to a disk of 160mm radius. The disk and drum have a
combined mass of 5kg and a combined radius of gyration of 120mm. A cord is attached as
shown and pulled with a force P of magnitude 20N. Knowing that the coefficients of static
and kinetic friction are µs = 0.25 and µk = 0.20, respectively, determine
a. whether or not the disk slides,
b. the angular acceleration of the disk and the acceleration of G.
