TUTORIAL 6 Plane motion of Rigid Bodies: Energy and Momentum Methods BCE/II/I

1. Each of the gears A and B has a mass of 2.3 kg and a radius of gyration of 102 mm, while
gear C has a mass of 11.3 kg and a radius of gyration of 190 mm. A couple M of constant
magnitude 9.15 Nm is applied to gear C. Determine
a. the number of revolutions of gear C required for its angular velocity to increase
from 100 to 450 rpm, [10.57 rev]
b. the corresponding tangential force acting on gear A. [5.15N]

2. The double pulley shown weighs 14kg and has a centroidal radius of gyration of 165mm.
Cylinder A and block B are attached to cords that are wrapped on the pulleys as shown.
The coefficient of kinetic friction between block B and the surface is 0.25. Knowing that
the system is released from rest in the position shown, determine
a. the velocity of cylinder A as it strikes the ground, [2.93m/s ]
b. the total distance that block B moves before coming to rest. [2.36m]

3. A slender 4-kg rod can rotate in a vertical plane about a pivot at B. A spring of constant
k = 400 N/m and of unstretched length 150 mm is attached to the rod as shown. Knowing
that the rod is released from rest in the position shown, determine its angular velocity after
it has rotated through 90°. [11.13rad/sec ccw : 3.27rad/s cw ]

4. A bullet weighing 0.08 lb is fired with a horizontal velocity of 600 m/s into the lower end
of a slender 7 kg bar of length L =600mm. Knowing that h =240mm and that the bar is
initially at rest, determine
a. the angular velocity of the bar immediately after the bullet becomes embedded
[35.9rad/s cw ]
b. The impulsive reaction at C, assuming that the bullet becomes embedded in 0.001s.
