ASSIGNMENT II (Due on 29 April 2021, 11 PM)

KINEMATICS AND DYNAMICS

1. An U-tube shown below contains a liquid. Using energy method, determine the equation of
motion and the natural frequency in cps. If the liquid is set into motion. Assume that the tube is
of uniform cross-sectional area A (m2). The density of the fluid is ρ (kg/m3) and total height of
the liquid column is L.

2. A washing machine of mass 50 kg operates at 1200 rpm. Find the maximum stiffness of an
isolator that provides 75 % isolation. Assume that the damping ratio of the isolator is 7 %.
3. A steel shaft (E=210 GPa) of diameter 25 mm and length 1000 mm is supported at it two ends
in bearings. It carries a turbine disc of mass 20 kg at the middle with eccentricity 5 mm and
operates at 6000 RPM. Considering the damping factor as 0.02, find the bearing reactions when
the shaft runs at 1.5 times its critical speed.
4. A sensitive instrument with mass 100 kg is to be installed at a location where the acceleration is
20 cm/s2 at a frequency of 25 Hz. It is proposed to mount the instrument on a rubber pad
having properties; k=2900 N/cm and damping ratio=0.2. What acceleration is transmitted to
the instrument?.
5. A thin disk is supported on spring mounted bearings with vibration pickup and stroboscope.
While running at 600 rpm ccw, the disk indicates maximum amplitude of 2.8 mm at 45 deg cw
from a reference mark on the disk. Next, a trial weight of 56.7 gram is added at the rim in a
position 91.5 deg cw from the reference mark and run at the same speed. Now the unbalance is
6 mm at 80 deg cw from the reference mark. Determine the position and weight necessary to
balance the original disk.
6. Synthesize a four bar mechanism for obtaining three positions of the coupler as defined by its
coordinates C1(29,97), D1(54,141), C2(64,108), D2(107,133), C3(124,98), and D3(149, 141)
which are specified in mm. Attach a driver dyad at a suitable location.

7. A cam with the base radius of 50mm, rotating cw at a uniform speed of 1200 rpm is required to
move a knife-edged follower with cycloidal as described below.
-Follower to complete outward stroke of 50mm during 90 deg of cam rotation

-Follower to dwell for the next 90 deg of cam rotation

-Follower to return to its initial position during the subsequent 90 deg of cam rotation
-Finally, follower has to dwell in the minimum position for the remaining 90 deg of cam
rotation.

(i) Draw the cam profile in order to achieve the above said motions in the same order

(ii) Determine the maximum velocity during outstroke.

8. In a reverted epicyclic gear train, the arm A carries two gears B&C and a compound gear D-E.
The gear B meshes with gear E and the gear C meshes with gear D. The number of teeth on
gears B,C and D are 75, 30 and 90 respectively.
i) Sketch the arrangement of the gear train.
ii) Find the speed and the direction of gear C using tabulation method when gear B is fixed
and the arm A makes 100 rpm cw.
