Self Assessments

A self assessment is an evaluation of one's own performance and abilities. It is an

opportunity to be able to understand themselves and reflect on their strengths and weaknesses to

find room for improvement. In this essay I will discuss what results I got on the different self

assessments that I took and I will compare and contrast them with my evaluation of myself

compared to these assessments. Through the process of self reflection and analysis stemming

from these assessments, I have been able to gain a better understanding of my own strengths and

weaknesses.

Career

When going through the Kuder Career Interests Assessment there were some really

interesting and even kind of funny moments that exposed themselves to me about myself. One of

the first things that I noticed was there are generally a lot of things that I enjoy doing and found

myself answering on the higher end for a lot of the options. I then stopped to think about the

questions and the answers I was giving them, and then I realized that I should be answering them

a little more critically. Instead of just thinking about the questions in the way that I was, I

imagined the questions were aimed at if I would enjoy doing these things on a saturday

afternoon and then all of the sudden a lot of the options sounded completely different than

before. I actually had to restart the assessment because I felt like I could get more accurate

results this second time around.

Enterprising, Conventional, and Artistic was the score that I received on the Kuder

Career Interest Assessment. I would have to generally agree with the results that I got on this

assessment, however its hard for me to look at the results and say it is representative of me and

my career interests/skills. Art is something that I used to value more when I was younger
3

compared to now, but seeing it in my career interests kind of throws me off since it is not

something I ever saw myself doing for work.

The “Enterprising” interest is something that I feel like is more representative of myself

since I have always had a goal of starting a business and having multiple businesses. Since I was

younger I always wanted to be able to have something for myself because it is something my

parents talked about wanting and they gave me the confidence to believe I would one day have

whatever I set my mind to. Thanks to them and putting that belief in me it has led me closer to

more enterprising types of interests compared to realistic or investigative interests.

The “Conventional” interests that the assessment labeled for me is another one, like

artistic, that I would not really agree is something that I particularly take interest in.

Conventional interests are described as data keeping and bookkeeping tasks, and these are not

really my favorite things to be doing. I would say I probably got these interests labeled for me

because “Conventional” interests are something that I see as being beneficial to learn and

understand, but it is not what I prefer to be doing in my leisure time.

When looking at the individual career choices it was interesting to see some of the

suggestions it had, and some were even things that I would have maybe enjoyed had I been a

little different in one way or another. Some of the options that looked interesting were things like

judicial law clerks and education administrators, these are things that I have an interest in and

would like doing but have no experience in either of them. I have also always been fascinated by

science and things like that, unfortunately it is one of those subjects that just do not get through

to my head the way it should. One of the top suggestions, however, was Medical and Health

Service Managers and that is actually the field that I am already working in and interested in

moving my career forward in.

Skils/Work Values

The next parts of the Kuder Assessments were the Skills Confidence Assessment and the

Work Values Assessment. For the Work Values Assessment it gives you a test with a bunch of

options on things that you feel like you would be able to do. This was hard for me, too, because

there is not a bunch of things I believe I am extremely good at nor extremely bad at. I kind of

consider myself like a Jack of all trades so answering some of the questions was a little difficult.

As the assessment went on I noticed that some of the options became a little more direct and

descriptive and I knew I definitely did not know how to do some of the things they were

mentioning.

Social, Enterprising, and Artistic were the three skills that I scored as having the highest

confidence in. This assessments results are more accurate and representative of myself in my

opinion because these are three skills that I am quite comfortable with. Even though I said arts

were not a main interest of mine anymore, I feel like I am knowledgeable on certain arts due to

my liking it when I was younger. For a few years in my teenage years I was able to be in the art

club at school with my friends so thanks to me spending my freetime at school over there I got to

learn a good amount about art that I would not have otherwise.

The social and enterprising skills are two skills that I think I use almost everyday at work

and in my personal life. I am not the most social person all the time, but I know when and where

it is required of me and usually I can turn it on and off exactly when I need to. I have confidence

in my social skills but it is not a shock to me that this did not come up in the interests assessment

because for the most part I am not interested in being more social than what I have to be.

The Work Values Assessment was my favorite out of the bunch from the assessments and

it also came in as the most accurate results, in my opinion. The value that scored the highest for
5

me was income and it is something that is true for me. I typically do not care what type of work I

have to do, as long as the money is good enough for me, it is something that I can see myself

doing. Lifestyle being next on my values list is ironic because usually the jobs with the best

income have to sacrifice their lifestyles and make it all about work. Hopefully I will be able to

get the best of both as I try and lock in on the career that fits me best in the future.

Motivation Anchors

When taking the Motivation assessment it was interesting to see which categories I

scored highest in and which I scored the least in. I had a feeling when I saw the categories which

ones I was going to place in based on the answers I was giving during the assessment and when I

got my answers I was not necessarily surprised. The portion I scored the highest in was

entrepreneurial creativity and this is what I expected to score the highest in due to me being

interested in starting and operating a business one day. The portion I scored the next highest in

was the managerial competence portion. This is also not much of a surprise to me because I

usually think of things with a kind of a business mindset approach and work into most of the

decisions I make. I ended up scoring the lowest in the sense of service category and I think that

has to do with the way the questions were worded. I like to think I enjoy helping others out and

this was the one result on the assessment that ended up being a shock to me.

Other Assessments

When taking the “classic” personality assessment I got rated with a personality type that

best fit my answers. Based on my score I got the ESFP (Extroverted, Sensing, Feeling,

Perceiving) personality type, also known as the "Entertainer," based on usually being outgoing,
6

enthusiastic, and sociable in nature. I would say I agree with parts of this assessment and on the

other hand some of it does not accurately describe me. I have always considered myself to be

adapting to different situations and people in order to fit in and this leads me to question whether

or not the test truly captured my true self or if I was just responding in a way that I thought

would align with the ESFP type. I am still unsure about my true personality type and will

continue to reflect on it in the future.

I also went ahead and took the “Love Styles” assessment in order to understand the side

of me in relationships a little better, too. According to the assessment my results said that I am a

practical lover. I could see that since I tend to approach relationships in a logical and realistic

manner, focusing on practical qualities such as compatibility and long-term potential. I tend to

value communication and trust in my relationships, and I am willing to put in the effort to make

things work. I believe that a healthy balance between independence and togetherness is essential

in a successful relationship. I also value compromise and understanding in my relationships and

try to avoid conflicts as much as possible. I am committed to my relationships, and I am willing

to make sacrifices for the people I care about. Overall, being a practical lover means that I am

someone who is realistic, logical, and goal-oriented in my approach to love and relationships.
