As a student, why is learning about basic anatomy important? What do you think are the
advantages of having anatomical knowledge in movements, exercises and injuries? (10 points)

Anatomy is a field in biology that is related to the description and identification of the parts of a
body, or structure of a body of living things (Britannica, 2022). Learning anatomy tends to our
curiosity about what is or what are inside our body. Reading books on anatomy and learning it
thoroughly answer the question “What’s inside our body” and it also helps to understand the
physiology of the body. Aside from the instinct to answer the curiosity of a person, it is still
important to learn it from the view of a student. There are several factors why learning it is
important not only academically, but also on applying it in real life.

Looking from my perspective, as a normal student, knowing the basic anatomy opens up the
path to understanding each part’s functions or physiology. Learning anatomy solely without
physiology is just plain memorizing the book. So, learning anatomy leads the way to physiology.
Aside from that, anatomy also helps us to determine the location of each part, what system it
belongs to, and the other parts that are located in its area. Students are apt to identify and call
the parts of their bodies by their specific names. For example, if my colleague said that his
spinal cord hurts due to long hours in online classes, I would easily determine that he is
referring to his back since the spinal cord is located in the rear part of our body. With learning
basic anatomy as a student, conversing and understanding with other students are easier.
Additionally, learning anatomy and physiology helps us to identify the part’s neighbor parts and
which system it belongs. An example of circumstances like this that occurs not only in school,
but also outside of it is when you broke your fibula, it can damage its neighboring tissues like
tibialis anterior, medial patellar, and gastrocnemius.

Aside from looking at the learning of anatomy and understanding physiology in the perspective
of a student, there are also important when it comes to movements, exercises, and injuries. As
a person who joined the ROTC and does physical exercise regularly, I can specify and pinpoint
the area or part of my body that I find weak and needs to be strengthened. Since anatomy is the
branch of science that deals with the identification of parts of a body, I can determine and label
the parts of the body that I want to be strengthened. For example, if I want to bulk my upper
body, I will do exercises/workouts that involve the upper body. To specifically address this, I
have to execute workouts that enhance my biceps, triceps, shoulder, and chest.

To talk about the importance of knowledge of anatomy and physiology when it comes to
movement, If I want to have good footwork, I would do exercises that enhance my lower body
and practice drills regularly that involve the movement of feet. Specifically, the drills that we
should perform for good footwork must involve the tibialis anterior, extensor hallucis longus,
extensor digitorum longus, gastrocnemius, plantaris, soleus, and fibularis longus.

In addition to movement and exercises, learning the anatomy of our body can avoid injuries and
help us to treat fractures, sprains, and injuries when the time comes. During an emergency or
tending a first aid, we will have an idea on how to treat each part of the affected based on the
degree of the injury. The anatomy gives the first step or the basic knowledge about a certain
body of a living thing. With that in mind, you cannot treat an injured individual without learning
the anatomy.

Having a knowledge of what our body is composed of is necessary since it’s our own
embodiment. It would be hard for us to survive if we do not know the most basic knowledge
about our body. As a PUP student who lives outside the NCR, it is necessary for me to acquire
knowledge in anatomy. Learning it can help me to be more physically active, to avoid getting
non-communicable diseases, which is detrimental for a student like me. It’s important to be
ready for different challenges including the inju`ries I might encounter.
