TOPIC: DEFINING BEAUTY.

Introduction

How can you determine if someone is attractive when you first meet them? The most

common response you can come across is based on appearance. The majority of people believe

that one's outward appearance alone defines one's beauty. Some could counter that inner beauty

is more significant than outward beauty. Given that everyone has different ideas about what is

beautiful, it is challenging to adequately describe beauty. In my opinion, the sole opponent in the

pursuit of beauty is oneself.

Physical beauty simply produces transient pleasurable feelings in the mind, whereas

attractiveness can lead to long-lasting relationships. However, beauty in terms of outward

appearances rules many cultures worldwide. For instance, American culture frequently places

significance on one's appearance. Through the process of enculturation, that value is passed

down from one generation to the next via families, peers, and the media. Young children first

learn from their family how to think and feel about physical attractiveness. A good example is

the television program Toddlers & Tiaras, which follows the families of young entrants in child

beauty pageants. The mothers of contestant’s groom and pressure their young daughters to look

just like their adult counterparts, including waxing eyebrows and applying a lot of cosmetics.

Because of this, these young girls are taught that having a stunning appearance is the only way to

succeed and acquire what they desire. "Facial attractiveness is the most important thing, in life

and in pageants," particularly emphasized Daisey Mae, an 8-year-old pageant pro.

In addition to families, the media has a big impact on how people see beauty, which is

typically associated with attractive bodies and nice faces. Images from women's magazines,

according to Angela Carter's "The Wound in the Face," provide women preconceptions of what

attractive bodies and faces "are intended to look like." Because they believe their bodies are

unattractive and in need of an upgrade, women frequently spend a fortune trying to seem as

beautiful as models and superstars.

Even while external beauty predominates, not everyone must concur with that notion.

Some individuals think that inner beauty is more significant. Sadly, modern civilizations have

reduced the perception of beauty to just the visual sense, but we often forget that a person's

actual beauty can also be determined by their inner beauty. We frequently pass snap judgments

on someone based just on how they appear. For example, a man with dark skin, a thick beard,

and bulky muscles is viewed as aggressive and fiery. Another guy, with white complexion and a

baby face, is regarded as cute and reliable. Because we don't know their true inner side, these

assessments are frequently false. A person with a gorgeous appearance but a nasty heart is

genuinely hideous. Time will eventually cause his or her appearance to age. Even if they want

the knife assistance, they cannot retain their youth indefinitely. The individuals surrounding that

person flee due to that person's nasty nature. He or she will consequently turn out to be

disfigured from the inside out.

An ugly person with a great heart, on the other hand, is beautiful. Personality and morals

are viewed as aspects of inner beauty. They show their inner selves via their compassion and love

for others. Their inner beauty draws others to them and forges strong relationships with them.

Since inner beauty never ages, it can mask an individual's outward signs of aging. Because there

are others who are willing to love and care for them in return, a person with a wonderful

personality will always feel beautiful and joyful, regardless of their age.

Concussion

In addition to the two conventional definitions of beauty, the way people think about

beauty has evolved over time. Because it can be created within oneself, beauty need not be

perceived and valued by others. My definition of beauty is learning to accept and love your body

and getting over your bias towards it. My definition of "beautiful" is shaped by Alice Walker.

Walker details her quest to fall in love with her right eye in "Beauty: When the Other Dancer is

the Self."
